Is a yam or a sweet potatoe good to have whan you are a diabetic?

I am rather fond of those little red potatoes, though I guess they probably count the same as the white potatoes. ( A side note: I thought they looked wrong, but my spell checker says that is the correct spelling for the plural of potato. ) Talk about sugar overdose, candied yams are a personal favorite at thanksgiving.

My test meter has shown that sweet potatoes are an OK food for me. Sometimes I have even had my meter say low reading after a meal which included some sweet potatoes. Other potatoes are not so good for me and I can eat a small portion occasionally. There are some foods that should be ok , but my meter tells me not to eat them.
Listen to your meter and try a food and test. That is the only way to know if you can eat it or not.

Carbs are carbs. You can basically have anything you want so long as you stay within a balanced nutritional plan that includes calories, carbs, fat, sodium and everything else. Sweet Potatoes (aka yams) are very healthy sources of vitamins and minerals but that doesn't make them better or worse than white potatoes, a candy bar or anything else in terms of affecting your glucose. Too many carbs, regardless of the source, will increase your blood glucose. Portion control is one key answer to your question but the other answer is what your test meter and your tastebuds have to say. The potatoes themselves are not horrible things but watch out for all of the dressings (butter, brown sugar, marshmallow creme or whatever you put on them).

There is no "diabetic diet" per se but the healthier you eat and the more you stay within your meal and/or daily allowances of food components, the better your weight and glucose will respond. Some people take the whole diet and food thing overboard in what they can and cannot have. Just watch the size of the potato you're considering, test 1-1/2 to 2 hours after the first bite, and let you meter be your guide.

You will find out what amount of calories, carbs and such works for your control. Stay within those guidelines and you'll be able to avoid complications from diabetes and be able to learn about sensible eating. Everybody … and every body… is different.

Carb counting is a true test of prove that high school algebra really does have a place in life after graduation. If X is your allowance of calories and Y is the value from the sweet potatoe, you have X-Y worth of meals and snacks for the rest of your meal or day. There are no savings plans for these nutritions.

Be good to your mind, body and soul and avoid stressing out with the "can" and "can'ts" … Eat to live. Don't live to eat!!!

I was told sweet potato, no white potatoes at all, only a small portion once in a blue mo, on the white potatoes.. This came up in my class.

Generally speaking a yam is better than a white potato since it has more fiber in it. But only you can determine what is best for you and your body. Use your glucometer to see how much a yam will raise your Blood Glucose numbers.

i was told red potatoes are better than the white ones not as much starch. i also eat sweet pot and dont bother me but dont eat as many as i used to either.

yes there is a difference. Here in the US we often refer to yams as "sweet potatoes" but sweet potatoes are different than yams botanically.

You can look up both in a resource like http://nutritiondata.self.com/ and determine for yourself which would be better for you. And the only real way to determine what is better for YOUR own body is to test each one by eating each and use your glucometer to determine how your body digests it and reacts to it.
