I have just recently found out that I may be diabetic, after a doctors visit after I was drinking something all the time, having to get up 7 or 8 times a night to use the restroom, physically tired all the time and a very pungent sweet smell on my breath at times. The dr said my blood sugar was 150 after fasting. Is that very high and what can I expect from here? I have another dr appointment in a few weeks. This is all kind of scary and my dr didn't really tell me much.

I was very scared when I was diagnosed too! And my fasting sugar was way higher than yours! Hopefully they did an A1C test and will discuss those results when you go back in a few weeks. Ask many questions when you go back. Write them down before hand.. Have the doctor explain your A1C reading to you.. Also try finding a free education class in your area! I have not found one but I have found so much help from support groups online and meetings in my area!

It's scary and very overwhelming in the beginning. May I suggest that you call your local hospital and ask about a diabetic educator. That's a really good starting place. Remember, there will be frustrating, scary, overwhelming times. Just try to remind yourself that you csn do this one step at a time.

i had the same problem,i went to the dr becouse i had to pee all the time and was tired alot ,also my pee had a sweet smell to it,and im always complaining of a dry mouth.but i really started to go to the dr when i had to pee all the time, she said lets check for diabetes,i didnt think anything of it until a couple days later she called me and said i need to see u is today good for u,then i knew something was up,she put me on oral meds, and told me to watch my diet and exresize,i was really awed by all of this becouse for one i thought that i would have to gained alot of weight or somethying, becouse for years i knew i had the chance of becoming diabetec, from bieng hypoglycemic,so my dr always said to watch my weight ,so i have,so i was really shocked when i found out,but im doing good just on my oral meds and diet and exersize,i really wish people would hear and learn alot more about diabetes like they do cancer becouse it is just as deadly, and needs more attention,i serously thought in order to get this desease u had to be over weight, like obese boy was i wrong.

That reading is 8.3 in the UK and a fasting reading over here should be between 4-7 (72-126) after a meal it should be 10 or under (180 or under) but I'm sure different doctors probably give differing advice both in the UK and in the US

It pretty much the same here.
See if he can send you to a class that teaches you everything to do and what to eat. That was the most helpful thing my doctor did! Don't be scared. We have all survived the same thing!! HUGS

Hi, I was having the same problems about 3 weeks ago. I was hospitalizrd because my blood sugar was in the 400's and from what I learned this # is extremely dangerous, now that I was diagnosed I am very careful with the foods I eat. It's very scary at first but knowing that you can actually control it is GREAT!! I hope everything goes well for you, and also do lots of research I too din't get enough info by the doc. and so I registered to this web and it has become very handy for me.

Yes doctors are very vague. He might want to run a few more tests to determine that you are diabetic. If not he's likely going to work out a treatment plan with you. Sometimes people can conrrol their diabetes with pills alone. I could not. I was running 300 to 400 on my blood sugar. I needed insulin. So I'm taking two different insulins now and I'm under nice tight control of my sugar. Your doctor should explain the importance of testing your blood and how often he would like you to test. I test 4 times a day. Somepople test even more. The reason we test and watch our numbers is because complications can occur at 150 and above. This is why we have treatment plans to keep our numbers down at target range.your doctor will discuss this with you. Good luck and I've hopwd I've helped in a way. Yake take care!
