There are related discussion threads where this topic is covered in great detail, but the condenses, as I recall, was that diet contains lots of other ingredients that can have undesirable side affects, so sticking with the full sugars was the better choice of the two, BUT done in extreme moderation because we need to always need to balance out the extra sugar.
There were many other good points and information covered as well. Very much worth dong a topic search and and reading up.
Welcome and stay active!

I see no problem with drinking diet soda's. Although studies show that people who did diet soda seem to be more obese that those that drink regular soda. There's something that clicks in your brain that senses no calories, so it thinks you need more food, so you eat. So why doesn't it like water to no calories?
The only problem I see with drinking diet is that if you have kidney problems, it says not to drink cola' can drink clear diets

You CAN consume diet soda pop with alternative sweeteners should you choose to do so. And I did for a while.

But I read about a trigger in one's brain which detects sweetness. When the sweetness is not accompanied by a corresponding rise in Blood Glucose levels, one will get the munchies until the BG levels rise. I have therefore chosen to no longer drink soda pop of any kind nor sweeten my drinks at all. I drink mostly water, a little coffee, and almond milk.

It wasn't until I stopped consuming artificially sweetened things that I have really gotten my diabetes under the best control since my Dx.
