I'm having a problem trying to eat 3 meals and snacks a day. So does a Carnation Breakfast essentials drink count as a whole meal? Or do I still have to eat something with it?? I'm just not hungry till late in the afternoon and used to eating just one meal a day so this is going to be hard to get used to. Can I supplement drinks for meals?? Thanks, Ellen :)

Here is what I worked out with my dietician, and have used since I was diagnosed back in 2008 with type 1. I get to eat around 75 carbs for breakfast, and then 50 carbs for lunch, and finally 75 carbs for dinner. After about 3 to 4 hours after each meal I have a 15-30 carb snack, and I always choose fruit for the snack. Your carb count may be very different from mine, but if you see a dietician they will work with you, and help form a plan that fits you. I highly recommend a dietician. I always have some proteins with none to very low carbs to help me feel full for much longer. Also, drink plenty of water after each meal. I found a drink called Metromint that is a flavored water with 0 carbs, calories, and everything else. There are different flavors, and are all very pleasant, as long as you like a hint of mint. Either way drink some water. I usually try to drink 8 to 16 ounces of water after each meal.

Hey Chad, Thanks for the input I really appreciate it!! I'm Type 2 and have had no medical insurance so I couldn't afford a dietician. Just got my medical insur. yesterday! NOW I can really work on getting better! My biggest problem is not so much what or how much I eat it's TRYING to eat all that in one day that's killing me!! I've been a Cook for 25+ years and only eat ONE meal a day for as long as I can remember!! Working with all that food all the time was a turn off to me. Just trying to eat MORE everyday is a huge challenge for me!! I KNOW that's why I'm overweight contrary to popular belief! And almost ashamed to say I just don't get the CARB thing at all! When I first found out I had Diabetes I took a class and all they said was to watch my sugar intake, nobody said anything about Carbs! And I HATE plain water so I will give the Metromint a try if I can find it around here. Thanks for writing! And I will DEFINITELY seek out a dietician AND an Endo!! LOL

i don't have a dietician either and i don't like to eat at all from my experience i've found the checking blood sugars is the most inportant thing you can do if your sugars are good you don't have to eat but do eat some thing lite and keep checking your sugars it's really simpler sugars up don't eat sugars down eat

You may also like to try the Sobe lifewaters that are made with a sugar sub, No carbs and no sugar and there are vitamins added to some of them. I drink several different flavors as I don't like plain water that much either. My dr didn't have a problem with them either. Most grocery stores have them along with super walmarts and target stores.

Carbs are sugars, so when you see carb counts it is basically sugar counts. I wish I was a cook, or at least a few cook skills. I am a pretty good griller, but who isn't? LOL. I get my Metromint from Jewel, Dominick's, and Whole Foods. It is in the water section at Dominick's, the Organics section in Jewel, and I think the water section of Whole Foods. I live in Illinois, Land of the Corrupt, so I am not sure if the Metromint would be in the same aisles where you live, but I would think so. I agree that plane water is blah. I actually look forward to my Metromints, however.

I don't know how people can eat 6 small meals a day. I am a B-fast, lunch & dinner type of guy, with maybe a mid-morning snack, afternoon snack, evening snack. So there is the six. The problem I have is making the meals smaller than a full meal. When I get up in the AM, I use to eat 2-3 bowls of cereal. I got down to 1-2 bowls. (Usually All-Bran or the like) By 10 I am ready for something to tie me over, by noon, I am ready for another meal. By 2 or 3 a snack (usually Slim Fast or whey protein) by 6, a full meal is in order. I have had some luck with B-fast, Whey or Slim, Whey or Slim for lunch, Whey or slim for afternoon snack, then supper. I guess when I drop 50 pounds I will know what works!

Jim and all, Margaret here from Australia - I am doing a diabetic H.E.L.P course at the hospital at present (Healthy Eating Lifestyle Programme) Mostly good advice but some BIG mistakes (They still promote Artificial Sweeteners for God's sake!) anyway I was always a big eater and I have cut down from 3 bowls of cereal to one CUP, from 4 crumpets (do u call them crumpets over there I wonder? lol) to ONE crumpet with ham (or some other sliced meat) avocado and cheese. The secret is to eat 1cm then put the crumpet down and chew thoroughly then swallow before picking it up again! I swear to God, it WORKS! I am lucky to get through a loaf a bread in TWO WEEKS now! (where previously I ate 2 loaves per week!) At 157cm (5 feet 2 and 1/2") and I went from 55kgs to 110kgs with a pituitary tumour, I lost weight, down to 70kgs but ballooned after gall bladder surgery as I developed a huge hernia post-op, and now have a Charcot's foot (left foot) which put me in a cast and wheelchair for5 months and now a C.R.O.W boot so cannot do much exercise (as I have 4 arm problems, upper and lower, BOTH sides!) Having just developed a RIGHT foot problem as well, waling is OUT. By the way, I thought Slim Fast was supposed to REPLACE a meal, not ADD to meals in between..lol…pardon the sarcasm…as you cut down, the weight starts to drop, believe me…lots of lettuce with meat, mung bean sprouts mushrooms etc wrapped up and THEY are the sandwiches, minus the bread…i WORKS, the weight is dropping off me!

Hello moonbeam, I got my "I rather be down under" shirt on today. I never been there, but it was a free shirt! I don't know what a crumpet is! Is it a roll or bun of some sort? My goodness Jim where do you put it all???!!! LOLOL I can't even PICTURE myself eating that much!! I would have to get the kid up and off to school and go to work and never had TIME for breakfast let alone the appetite for it! Once I got to work would just get too busy and before you know it it's time to go home! So never ate lunch either. Going from THAT to THIS is quite challenging to say the least!! It's all I can do to drink the Carnation Breakfast drink!! And then I'm supposed to eat AGAIN in 3 hours??? God give me strength!! Hey I'll let you know when I lose the 50 lbs I need to too!! Eating more can rev up the metabolism, just make sure you are eating the right things. There are tons of books on low-carb eating with meal plans, too. I make a simple green shake in the morning of coconut milk, raw eggs, a splash of pomegranate juice, and green powder. Oh, I add ice, too. It's fast and easy and gives me tons of energy! Make sure the eggs are organic and free range. It's the commercially farmed eggs that give you salmonella because of the hideous conditions these poor chickens are forced to live in!

I used to be a, ( OK I'm going to be showing my age and southern roots but ). I used to be a Breakfast- Dinner - Supper person. It has been really hard for me to make the change from Dinner, and Supper to Lunch and Dinner. Oh well it's still the same meal. Now I eat like a Hobbit in Lord of The Rings LOL. Remember Oneses-, then breakfast, twoses,- then lunch, threeses,- then supper, and then bedtime snack. Thats seven small meals and/or snacks. It does take some getting used to.

The ONLY time I've eaten Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner was when I lived with my Mom and Dad many, many moons ago!! lol (And yes I'm showing MY age too!! lol) I get discouraged sometimes but still trying and I guess that's the most important thing huh?! I have never been a breakfast person. I think it stems from the fact as a child I would gdet sick if I ate in the morning after I got up. I still can't eat until at least 9 or 10 in the morning.

Nanaellen… Not to worry… I am the same way… I could go all day and before I know it I have not eaten a thing! But since I have been eating 6 small meals ,I have noticed if I miss one I am hungry. There is this pizza I just love!!! It is thin crust, spinach and garlic… So I fold it in half and make it like a Quesadilla. Anyway the point is… If I eat that pizza all at one time!!! Oh my goodness, I am in bed feeling terrible!!! My blood sugar through the roof!!! If I quarter it and eat 1/4 every 2 to 3 hours… My blood sugar is not affected and I get to have my favorite pizza… all of it. You will figure it out. But yes, You must eat.:)

I love the Atkins shakes and the Glucerna shakes. I find that any others I have tried spike my BS too high. Any of the ones that are diabetic friendly, like The Slimfast carb controlled are pretty good. The G;ucerna and Atkins just happen to taste the best to me. Keep hanging in there. Luv U

Oh my! I don't think we meant to beat you over the head about not skipping meals, but in any case, glad we were able to "convince you"'
My personal take on the subject is, as long as it is nutritionally balanced, not full of extra bad ingredients, and it is part of a regular meal plan, you will probably do just fine.
No one is suggesting you to eat a big meal, simply take in nutrition at regular intervals so your blood sugars stay leveled out. The good news is, the snacks also help to curb your hunger, so you never go into "starvation" mode.

I had to laugh reading your post!! I think it was my Mom that beat me over the head!! LOL She's been telling me this stuff for years!! LOL And I think my body has been in "starvation" mode for WAY TOO LONG!! THAT'S why I'm overweight contrary to what others may think! I have trouble eating three meals a day too. First, I'm just not that hungry; 2, I can't afford to eat three meals a day; 3, I have problems with getting enough protein. I thought about the protein shake and although I love the idea, one needs to TEST it out to see if it works FOR them. A neighbor gave me an almost full bag of protein drink (31 grams of protein, 8 grams of carb) and my sugars hit the roof! For some reason this just doesn't work for my system/body. Now I eat quinoa at 31 grams carb, and 8 grams protein and my BG is fine. Weird!!!!! See if this works for you. But…I'll tell you like everybody tells me, one meal a day doesn't cut it, your asking for trouble!! Just passing it on down the road. And ya, a good healthy protein shake can replace a meal.

I've heard a lot of people talking about this quinoa. EXACTLY what is it?? I've never heard of it before. Yes I know one meal a day is not good for you, my Mom yells at me all the time for it but I haven't eaten 3 meals a day since I can remember!! Maybe because I've been a Cook for 25+ years and working with food all day and 1/2 the night turned me off to food!! I just don't get hungry till LATE in the day! 3 meals and snacks seems like I'll spend all of my time eating!! Ellen :)

I can empathize with you about 3 meals a day. But eating six small meals (more like snacks) will help keep your blood sugars on a more constant level (I need to do this too) LOL. As for quinoa, it is a grain type food from Bolivia, that is a complete protein, meaning it has all eight amino acids, a super food! I recently read in a news report that quinoa is a big export that helps the Bolivians purchase "better" food, but what is reality is that those who grow, cultivate, harvest and eat the super food are now in poor health for not eating quinoa. It is a small kernal and is cooked just like rice 2 parts water - 1 part quinoa. It is tasteless, but takes on flavor of food it is cooked with. I replace it where I'd use rice. I purchase it at Costco for a 4 lbs bag @ $10.

Quinoa is great. It is considered a super food. Congrats on eating it, I wish a lot more people ate it. I also like oat bran with a piece of whole grain toast for breakfast, (oat bran not oatmeal) and an oat bran muffin for snack.There are a lot of really good foods that you can eat as a snack. Blueberries are good for you and are a super food. Of course you should always check with your doctor or dietician.

Quinoa has absolutely no taste, it takes on whatever it is cooked with. I'm now combining a whole wheat pasta with quinoa and peppers. Wheat pasta & brown rice spike my sugars big time, but with the quinoa I hope not as bad, plus it gives me a carb. I guess I should try the oat bran.

Yes quinoa does need seasoning. Maybe a little fresh herbs. I usually fix it as an additive to something else, instead of rice or pasta. I also use fresh pepper in it. The yellow or orange bell pepper is my favorite,and they say that those colors are better for you. Of course sometimes I use a little spicier pepper. I hope you like the oatbran.

I don't have a problem eating. i love to eat, but I'm a snacker. I just keep a few snacks in my locker at work and in my car . I spend alot of time in my car and this helps me to eat healthy

I would opt for a protein shake, you can get some good ones at the health food store and like another answer said perhaps have 1/2 and save the other 1/2 for later or just make 1/2 if you are using powder. Also I find Glucerna shakes and snacks a help. I would check with your MD before making changes. S=You need to watch some "instant" meals have high portion of sugar. I wish you well…

I have only tried the Chocolate, they have 2 kinds "snack shake" and regular, I forget the difference as both are same size. I like the flavor. You can take one and put in blender and add 3-4 ice cubes more if u want it thick and blend…makes a great cold milk shake thats satisfying.

you can also put your own flavors in the vanilla…I did try almond flavoring in a vanilla one and made it into almost ice cream. quite good…

the glucerna is ok I only like the chocolate one…but boost glucose control all of them are good!!! I do not care for any of the snack bars they taste too ricey but also had bad bad teeth so that didnt help

Breakfast supplements (think protein shakes instead of the carnation brand) are fine for giving your body something to fuel it but you should not consider living on them. Your body (for energy and weight loss or maintenance) needs more than just the vitamin and mineral contents from those products. You need fiber, fat, carbs, and even calories if you are to get your weight and/or glucose under control. Starvation doesn't do it. I personally eat 5-6 meals and snacks per day and keep my eye on portion control to help me. There is nothing wrong with finding things that will work well for you … for your tastes, tests and budget. Who said you can't snack on asparagus or low fat yogurt or the meat from chicken? You don't have to make everything that goes into your mouth into a full course meal. It's important that we eat to live and not live to eat. I try to eat something every 3-4 hours, drink a lot of water, exercise when I can, test when I can, and I find that planning ahead is the key to avoid binging. When faced with the decision to have a cookie or a baked potato, go for the potato. Both have carbs but the potato offers you vitamins and nutrients that the cookie doesn't have. You can still eat the foods you have always loved but watch the portions of them, keep a journal, and swap healthier ingredients when possible. When you want cottage cheese, opt for the lower fat variation. You will get needed calcium but without the heavy fat. Watch for lower sodium options. Fresh fruit and veggies are better for you than juices because of the fiber. Variety is indeed the spice of life. Carnation instant breakfast is fine for breakfasts but add to them mid-morning snacks, lunches, mid-afternoon snacks, dinners and even later night (light) snack options to keep your glucose in check and avoiding the diet roller coaster. Please make sure to get at least 1200-1500 calories a day which won't happen from the stuff in a box. Need recipes or planning help??? Drop me a line. I have never tried any breakfast supplements before. i am really going to try carnation instant breakfast and that will really save my tome in the morning doing the pancakes, eggs etc. i am on an 1800 cal plan, do you have any other menu suggestions like for lunch or dinner.

Hi Ray, Don't get the wrong idea I'm NOT trying to JUST drink protein shakes! Just something to tide me over until I DO get hungry withOUT starving myself! I just am finding it extremely hard to eat 3 meals a day plus snacks!! I've eaten one meal a day for as long as I can remember!! Just NOT hungry till after dinnertime! I just told Kevin I feel like such an idiot about all this food stuff because I've been a Cook for 25+ years and feel like I know absolutely NOTHING about food!! I've BEEN watching the sodium cause I have high blood pressure (for years) and started watching sugar content 6 years ago when first diagnosed but back then no one said a WORD about CARBS! I almost feel like I'm back in school learning all over again and I didn't like it the first time around!! LOLOL This is HARD!! Well, I wouldn't drink more than one meal, you still need to satisfy your daily requirements to stay healthy and have energy, and you aren't doing yourself any favors to try to do that in one meal. But maybe you could buy the powdered instant breakfast and just make a half glass, 4 oz, for your "breakfast" since you are not hungry and that would give you about 20 carbs. and some protein. And then maybe a small meal 3 hours later, maybe a salad or vegetable-filled soup with some sort of whole grain. Maybe later when you are used to having some food in the morning you can swap it for a better breakfast. Good luck.

I don’t see why you couldn’t find a low carb breakfast drink. I used to drink a low carb Atkins protein shake first thing in the morning. While on vacation I used the EAS brand protein shake. Both have only 2 net carbs per serving. I now buy the big 5 pound bag at Bjs of the EAS protein shake powder mix. I used to mix it with homemade nut milk but lately been just mixing it with water. I drink 1 serving first thing when I wake up. It cost 28 dollars at Bjs. More expensive elsewhere. Last for about 3 months.

For a mid morning snack I eat 1 serving of peanuts or sunflower seeds. Seems to keep me going until lunch.

I looked up the nutrition label on the Carnation Breakfast essentials online. The regular stuff has 39 grams of carbs per serving 31 grams of sugar. I wouldn’t drink it. I would stick with a low carb protein drink like Atkins or EAS. If you have a Bjs near by I believe its worth the membership price to buy certain foods.

The Carnation Breakfast essentials also has a no sugar added product. The label was confusing. It said 8 grams total carbs and 12 grams of fiber. I would have to look it up in the store and see what it is. If the 8 grams per serving is right. I would mix it with water or home made nut milk. I used to buy a low carb soy milk. You have to read labels, not all soy milk or almond milk sold in stores is low carb. I found most are not.

If you can find the no sugar added kind and read the label and if its only 8 grams total carbs I would give it a try. Just remember to test before and about 1 hour after drinking it. I wouldn’t mix it with milk. Milk is a high carb drink. Has lots of sugar. A low carb nut milk or soymilk would be better. Water is best. A low carb nut or soy milk will have about 2-3 net carbs per serving. Just subtract the fiber from the total carbs and you have net carbs. Works for me.

Yes I got the no sugar added one and the label says it has 12g Carb.,4 g fiber,& 7g sugar. I've been mixing it with 2 % milk. But that's all I have, is that bad? I feel like such an idiot being a cook all these years and feel like I know NOTHING about food!! I do have a BJ'S card but I'll wait to hear back from you about the drinks. Thanks for all your help! there is a low carb protein drink called carb solutions. it has only 3 net carbs per serving . it can be bought on amazon.com for $12.99 per can. they have vanilla and chocolate
