I have no appetite! Foods that I use to love are now tasteless! I only eat because I have to, my meds make me sick if I don't. Is this a problem for anyone else?

Yup Yup Yup … agree with everything you said. Its the metiformin for me that kills my appetite. I'd go all day without eating if at all possible. Plus, I eat enough to just get my meds down most days. So I know the feeling. The hardest thing for me is eating right when I do. I hate all mexican and spicey foods and salads —- green beans anyone?

I was reading an article awhile back about the importance of eating regularly. If you do not eat small meals several times a day; it puts your body into starvation mode, which in turn makes your body want to hold onto fat cells, and also causes the liver to dump insulin.

I too use Mrs Dash, and am so thankful for the many varieties available, I also picked up a couple of diabetic cook books, and surprisingly there is alot to offer and much of the food tastes just as good as the comfort food I was craving. I understand about not having an appetite, but I found once I started eating again, beginning with a good breakfast my appetite returned. And now i am able to listen to my body and know when I have had enough..that used to be a fond dream of mine.

Another plus? My body stays out of starvation mode and up's my metabolism. The weight is dropping, with diet, and exercise. I wish you well, and even though I am feeling positive I do understand how hard lack of appetite is.

I wish I could catch this! I would like to eliminate my taste buds somehow. If I couldn't taste -I would be only eating to the "food as fuel" concept and have the healthiest diet! Not tempted by Chocolate Cream Pie for dessert, I would eat a banana! If I didn't crave the taste of a Mocha Caramel Macchiati Grande…I just have a "coffee, black, please". My weight would be less than the lbs. I've already lost - not what it is with the lbs. I still need to lose. I dream about having no appetite and dead taste buds ~ ~ ~ ~

I do know what you are feeling…hard to believe that in '05 I was seriously ill and in the hospital…no appetite! And the Dr.'s and hospital Dietician and Nutricionist had to come to talk to me about eating more! Believe me, that was a first! (and last! LOL!) But this isn't a bad thing. Just plan small balanced snack meal every 3 hours. Stock up on fruit, granola, yogurt, peanut butter crackers, soup, nuts, etc. Eat to fuel your body every couple hours, just to keep BG and everything on an even keel.
I do understand, and don't mean to make light of it, I feel sorry that you feel so bad. Hope that you start to feel better soon..

JoleneAL 2011-06-01 10:29:12 -0500 Report

You can eat fruit, granola, and yogurt? I'm green with envy! Sugars go through the ROOF if I even think about eating any of the above.

Pynetree 2011-06-01 11:12:55 -0500 Report

Yep, I have been in pretty tight control…my A1c's , 4 times a yr. over 20 yrs..only hit a high of 7 two times.(both times when I had been hospitalized!) Usually averages between 5.2 and 6.4 . And I - like most DP's - can eat fruit, Light yogurt, and lo-sugar, loFat granola products. In moderation. My CDE told me there is nothing I can not eat…test and you'll know what to go light on…The only thing I tend to avoid is fruit juice..used to have orange or grapefruit juice every morning…but it spikes me, so I do avoid that.
I feel bad for you!

actually Elaine, I was thinking something along those lines just tonight. My meal routine is just that, pretty routine. I have been having wonderful numbers though, without shooting up insulin. Have had BG#s within normal ranges now for about a month or so. (with the exception of 2 times, when I "fell out of the saddle" and ate things I shouldn't have.)

elaine52 2011-05-28 10:14:12 -0500 Report

my numbers are up there even though I don't eat alot of anything, meat especially, veggies are my favorite, but even they are 'tasteless' these days. I am taking 1000 mg of metformin twice a day and 10 mg of glipizide twice a day, but my fasting bg#'s are usually between 200-300 range and well the rest of the time they vary in to 300-400-500 range…I know I need to get back in to see my dr but without my medical card right now it's hard to do, especially when I have absolutely no income on top of that…

I started having to take 1000 mg Metformin 5 times a day. Now that I am on a better diet and eating schedule I have been able to make it on 4 times a day. I am looking forward to hopefully getting down to taking it only twice a day. And yes stress does effect your BG #'s, so does colds, flu etc. Sometimes my food would get to tasting dull. Then I started using more seasoning with herbs. I prefer fresh herbs, but I can't always get them.

I understand what you mean. Eating the same stuff all the time can be terribly boring. I bought some Mrs Dash and started sprinkling it on my veggies and meats. It comes in different spice blends (didn't use to) and that seems to have changed and perked up some of the boring stuff and made it a bit more interesting. Maybe that will help you. Sure made my Eggbeaters taste better!(I hate Eggbeaters!)
I wonder if some of your high numbers are due to stress? Since you know you can't get to the doctor, you may be stressing about it and the other stuff and that would affect your numbers. Could that maybe be it?

majikinfl 2011-05-28 10:32:15 -0500 Report

Do you have any advice about how to keep Mrs Dash from clumping up, I bought several varieties and all have clumped together and so hard can barely get it out with a knife to put in soup. I live in Florida…I tried rice but it sticks to the rice. I know what you mean about boring eating same things every day or 2, your favorite can fast become your least favorite. Thanks for the input.

nanaellen 2011-05-29 13:29:14 -0500 Report

The best way to keep your spices from clumping together is to put in a zip lock baggie with a piece of BREAD! The bread absorbs the moisture! Just like brown sugar! :) Ellen

granniesophie 2011-05-28 10:38:56 -0500 Report

I would have said rice! It's all that humidity down there! Maybe try storing the bottle in a zip loc bag. Push all the air out and zip it closed. Do it each time you use the bottle. And don't store near stove, toaster, coffepot or in the fridge, anything that makes more humidity. Store in the coolest darkest place you can find in the kitchen.

elaine52 2011-05-28 10:31:10 -0500 Report

you are probably right, I have ALOT of stress in my life at the moment, not much I can do about it right now. I will have to try some of the Mrs Dash, maybe that will help.

Excellent idea! I'd love to visit Harlen and let him cook. Of course, I already love breakfast. And lunch. And dinner. … Maybe we could play with the white tigers too?

Me too. I never eat breakfast. There for a while I was trying to but it's so yucky to me to eat in the morning. I manage to maintain good numbers though. I eat a really small lunch. I suppose dinner is my biggest meal but it's not that bug. Tonight I ate 7 pieces of ravioli in my home made sauce and a green salad (very light on the dressing). I really don't mind cooking (but I hate dishes) but if it were up to me (and not my diabetes) I'd eat even less.

nanaellen 2011-05-27 16:31:25 -0500 Report

Yes, Yes, Yes!!! That's why I try to "skip" meals! Number 1) I haven't eaten 3 meals a day since I was a kid because I don't get hungry till after 4 or 5 p..m. and number 2) I HATE needles and don't want to take a shot if I don't have to!! Ever since I had my gall bladder out NOTHING tastes good anymore!! I know exactly what you mean!! Unfortunately I DON'T know how to make it better!! Ellen :)

Tigereyze209 2011-05-29 13:26:52 -0500 Report

My gal bladder was taken out about a month ago, and I can't tell any difference in my sense of taste.
I was also warned that I might be facing a future of no foods with any fat content in it, and possible uncontrollable bouts of diarrhea.
I thank god that so far, none of those have proven true.
I absolutely hate needles, and as it worked out, I now have to give myself insulin shots. Close second is taking pills. Needless to say, I take about a dozen a day for various reasons, to maintain my condition.
I have pretty much given up on the Things I don't want to do list in favor of the things I have to do for my own good list.
Good luck and God bless.

JoleneAL 2011-06-01 10:31:53 -0500 Report

Tigereyze209 - they told me the same thing when my gall bladder was removed — nothing happened like that. Guess we got lucky!

nanaellen 2011-05-29 14:18:13 -0500 Report

Yeah I have to watch the fat content also because I've been having problems with my pancreas. I HATE needles too!! When I first started this it was 3 shots a day and one at night. THAT was 6 years ago. Took me 6-8 mths but I got off the daytime shots and only had to do the nighttime one. Now because I ignored testing and got laxed about my diabetes I had the gall bladder removed and have had pancreatitus since Nov. And I also take about 7 other meds for blood press. heart meds and cholesterol. It's not that I don't WANT to do this just having a hard time getting used to eating! I've been a Cook for 25+ years and always looked at food like WORK and it was just a turn off for me so I usually only ate one meal a day. Now going to 3 meals plus snacks is just a whole lot to swollow LITERALLY!! LOL Ellen :)

Dear, you just made my day. (well, night.)
I have been in a pretty good mood today, for no real reason other than I just feel good, and you just gave me a great chuckle that topped it off. That is a great way to end things, so a good point to log off and go to bed, so, thanks.
