Why is having diabetes so expensive??

Geesh, it seems like everyday there seems to be something new to shell out money on; from meds, testing supplies, special vitamins, special OTC tylenol, doctors appointments, gas to get the appointments, herbs, special lotions, special socks, special shoes, special diets, special chocolate (that expense I'm ok with), books to read, log books to buy, computer programs to help with carb counting, and not to mention the jewelry some wear. Some days I think it would just be easier to get a double cheese burger from McDonals for a dollar.

Anyone else feel like this, or is it just me?

I get real frustrated over the expense because I am also a heart patient in addition to a diabetic. My medicine is outrageous. I do get mine through the Veterans but I am on so much that my copay is rediculous. I have lost my left foot and my right leg and that is even more meds. My right stump is still healing. And I think the cost of healthy foods for us in the grocery store is a crime. I live on a fixed income and can't afford to buy most of it. I try real hard to eat healthy but also get tired of eatingthe same stuff all the time. I just do the best I can.

Well I would like to say congratulations for doing all you do. Yes I agree healthy food is way more expensive. Sometimes a TV dinner is cheaper than buying vegetables. Thats just because they mass produce so much they can do it cheaper…a crime it is..

I agree everything is more expensive, and chocolate sugar free any/everything is worth it. I am still using the monitor I got in 2002, it works just fine. I take my meds while I wait the 30 seconds for it to work. Life is short, why rush thru it? I think people who are on low carb diets for weight loss are causing the low carb and sugar free product prices to rise. The old supply vs demand thing. I don't buy all the new gadgets and products unless it is something my doctors says I MUST have to stay healthy. Otherwise the manufactures are just feeding off of me. And, I only buy the low carb foods when they are marked down to the price of the "regular" products. On the bright, we spend so much on healthy foods, we have very little left to pay for the no no foods. Forced dieting.

I agree with you I don't buy all the gadgets out there. A good notebook is all you need to write down your numbers, what you eat and how much you execrise. I eat alot of salads, which is not that expensive. The companys know we need the low-carb food and the meds to live our lives, so they price it so they can get a good profit.

Having diabetes is extremely expensive. This should be encouragement for me to exercise to get the weight off, but so far I haven't gone to that extent. I guess it's easier for me to complain than to act. I will have to do better, but I'm in total agreement that the cost of having diabetes is over whelming.

Well I don't buy special vitamins, special tylenol, herbs, special lotions, special socks, special shoes, special chocolate, special diets, book, log books, computer programs or jewelery. Meds and testing supplies can be expensive but most of the other stuff isn't needed or can be got cheaply or for free if you need them. Even meds and supplies can be free if you qualify for them.

Some people do need the special socks and shoes as well as some of the other things that make life easier to live with this disease thank God if your not one of them. I know I don't need them yet but if I ever do you best believe I'm getting them as I can afford to buy them.
Thankyou for your time. Edie

I agree we have to have our meds and sometimes we really do wonder if we will ever get the bills caught up. Other people have to realize that our meds and food are not something that we can go without, and that it takes a little more for us to get the right kind of snacks that will not mess up our sugars.

I use Graham crackers and snack crackers with pickle bologna. Sometimes I even eat grapes, apples, oranges and bananas. I like to use vanillia icecream with Lite fruit cocktail and vanillia yogurt with milk to make a shake like I did for the Diabetics in the Alzymers unit at the Nursing Homes I worked in. We used the 4oz. dixie cups to pass for snack time with a sandwich I would make several sandwiches and cut in half then pass to everyone half of one with the shake. The night shift Nurse would leave me a phone message at home letting me know who had not had BM's for 3-4 days and I gave them 8 oz instead.

I am sorry it is so expensive for all of us and more so for others. I wish I could help pay for meds. but need to get mine first. and then I don't have much left. Trying checking online for the drug companies to see if any programs out there to help with costs for low income families and indiviguals. I'll start looking too and post anything I can find.

WELL THE MED INDUSTRY IS MAKING MONEY. LIKE ONE OF MY MEDS. IT COST ABOUT A PENNY TO MAKE A 100 PILLS THEN ANOTHER PENNY TO PACKAGE IT. BY THE TIME WE GIT THE PILL IT COSTS A 100 BUCKS, SO THAT EVERYONE THAT HANDLES THE MEDS MAKE 40%PROFIT AT A MIN. AN THEN THEY ADD MORE TO LOOK GOOD IN THE MARKET. SO NOW WE PAY AN PAY A HIGHER PRICE FOR WHAT WE GET.. AN FOR THEM ITS PROFIT, NOT WHAT IT DOES FOR PEOPLE THAT NEED IT…

it's the monopoly the drug companies have. prices aren't set on medications due to how much they cost to make but how much they are needed. insulin is a survival medication and they know it. I can't live without it. My father only lived for a couple months after refusing his. This is one of the many problems with medicine today.

Check out Meijer's, Walmart,Kroger and other Rx's they might have where you can get what you need for less money the first two have discounts on lots of Meds. Also ask your Dr. for the phone numbers or the websites for the Med. Companies. and ask for samples if you can't afford the scrips. My Dr. gave me samples for months. Then I called CCS Medical at 1-800-726-9811 they let me ride on the copays and took what the insurance company for my husbands Union paid. I owe them over $3000.00 now and am starting to get it caught up. going to Pay double monthly till it is all done. on the Months I don't have a payment I'll send in a double one anyway and catch up quicker. All you can do is ask the worst that they can say is no to you. I went for almost 4 months with out all of my meds. when the Dr. found out We could not afford them he got samples from the drug companies to give me and other patients as well.

Luckily so far, I've gotten help from one pharmacy on my insulin It's only a twice a year help program that they give insulin for free. I already used those two up when I got out of the hospital last month with type 2. I still have to find some help between samples from my doc for my insulins and my other meds. I've never been so strapped as I am now over all this medicine I'm taking. I've gotten alot of help also with strips, lancets, and meters.

I call the number on the back of my meter and they send me extra logs to post the numbers in. My Diabetes Educator gave me a calendar in Feb. that has the Log for charting my levels and seeing how they go up, down, down, up up up straight across for awhile then bottom out. I feel like I am the yoyo not on a Rail car flying fast just all over the place at once. I have felt better since I bottomed out a while back and now i'm sweating again like when I was a kid. Man at the end of the day I don't know who dislikes me more my husband or myself when the shoes come off. LOL

You are not alone. Sometimes I wonder if we are ever gonna catch up on bills again. There are many things I would LOVE to try but don't have the money for. I've noticed that eating healthy costs more too. AND now our 401 has hit rock bottom. What next.

Our Luxury is have Diabetes, so we are taxed for it!
Make sense? Doesn't to me, so I should be a Senator at least!!!
I guess I am saying just because. There is no reason.
