I received an email reminder from the International Diabetes Federation yesterday that was about some of the upcoming events and ideas they have for this years World Diabetes Day.

My little town here doesn't do anything for it, so I guess it's up to me to start something. I need to start planning now. Do any of you have suggestions on what I could do to raise awareness in my area?

What kind of things have your participated in or organized?

In October the ADA has a step up event (walk a thong) I got a bunch of people at work to pledge an amount of money and we walked along the river and I sent the money to the ADA. Maybe you could get in touch with ADA and get a walk together to raise money for ADA.

I'd love to organize something here geared toward adults with the big D. Most everything that goes on in this area is more to raise money and awareness about kids with diabetes. I've been toying with the idea of starting a support group in my area but don't really know how to go about that.

That is a great idea. One of the first places you can start is by contacting your local hospital or health care department. Or if you are on Yahoo, start a "meet up" group. There are a lot of ways to get it going.

Ive raised money in the past but I dont think a lot of people feel sorry for us so its hard to squeeze a donation from them! I dont know if this should make me laugh or cry!

Yeah, we have the invisible disease. It's easier to give when you are missing body parts, in a wheel chair or it happens to kids. Wait! That's us! People just need a little more education.

The Diabetes Federation of Ireland are having a sponsered walk this year!! i have rallied up the friends and so far so good!! its a midnight lunar moon walk!! it begins at 10pm and continues through the night until 6am! the walk is around Dublin city under the lunar moon! at the end the participants have their breakfast together in a hotel and there is a deal if you wish to stay the night! The walk is quite intense, its 30km however their when you registure you are given an exercise plan along with other ideas on how to raise the money!! (and the reasurance that paramedics are on stand by for those who need emergancy sugar)

The money which is raised goes to research and funding for diabtetic support groups!! The walk is the 25th June so i have a bit of time to get healthy and get some money raised!! The walk was a complete sucess last year and i hoping we will do the federation proud this year!!

Wish us all luck!

That is neat. I love walking in the moonlight. There is something primal about it and in the cool of the night, 30 K might not seem so bad....well....maybe. That is about 18 miles for those of over here. That is a long walk. I've done a 10K before, but never that long.

November 17 is the day I believe. That sounds like a family picnic would no longer have issues of what you can eat or not. LOL That is a great idea.
