Is there much difference in the GI side effects of the ER form of metformin??? I'm having difficulty with the diarrhea problems taking the 500mg regular form twice a day. Will there be less problems with ER?

Thanks for info.

I can't refer you to specific studies or anything, but when my endocrinologist put me back on metformin (along with my insulins), he specifically mentioned that he was going to use the ER version as it has fewer "stomach issues" than the older version. My issues were nausea and vomiting from the regular, but I have not had any of that , not even mild discomfort with the ER. I think it would be worth trying. Every body is different. What works for me might not work for you. Maybe your doctor can offer you a sample so you can try it for a week or so and see if there is any difference. That way you wouldn't have to start a second prescription if there was no difference.

I've been on Metformin since I was first diagnosed. Then along w/ that, I was put on glipizide, (taken off glipizide),put on tolinaise, taken off tolinaise. put on actos, taken off actos. And now it's januvia. As well as metformin. So as you can see, metformin has been around, it's the come and go of the other drugs. But getting back to the other, all the "er" stands for on your metform bottle is "extended relief. Gi side effects? Don't know. But try googling it.

I take Metformin 500 / 5 times a day. 2 at breakfast 1 at noon and 2 at supper. The only problem I have with it is when it starts working I get gas. So other than it being embarrasing I guess I'm lucky too. It does work great at bring my sugar down.

Have a good friend who takes 500 twice a day llike me and he's never had problem either. From what I read, over 50% of people have trouble with it. Hope i can find out more about the ER form of med.

I'm on 500mg twice a day of metformin and have a problem 2 out of 3 days. It seems that foods with higher fat content are the biggest problem.

I was diagnosed with type 2 about a year ago,and they started me on Metformin and it really messed with my stomach. I talked to my Dr. And after a few meds we went with Metformin ER. I no longer have the stomach problems and it is still on most $4.00 lists, which for me is important due to not having insurance.

Some people do better with the extended release. . . Certainly worth a try. I also hear that some people tolerate the combination of Januvia and Metformin "Janumet" better then Metformin by itself.

My Doctor emphasised the importance of taking Metformin AFTER a meal as it irritates the lining of your stomach

Thanks for the info. Going to a new Dr. in a couple of weeks and I'm going to suggest the ER first and will consider the Junivia combo too.

hotairjones~~ Metformin (either the er or not.) w/the januvia works great. Been on it for the past 5 or so years, and my bg#s never looked so good.
