Having a positive attitude is important . . . but let’s face it, diabetes isn’t all sunshine and roses (or glitter and unicorns, for that matter). So today let’s vent by listing ten things about diabetes that we hate. Make them funny, make them sarcastic, make them serious, make them anything you want them to be!! - Karen Graffeo

I have had diabetes-type 1 for 50 years. I have grown up with it. It has been difficult, but it is doable. Finally my opportunity to complain.

1. I resist checking my blood sugar 7 - 8 times a day, minimum, and keeping a record daily of the results. It is difficult squeezing my fingers for blood.

2. I resist eating snacks. I don't want to gain weight.

3. I don't like the fluctuating highs and lows. I get headaches.

4. I don't like not being able to wear sandles or stylish shoes. I love heels.

5. I don't like not be able to wear stylish clothes. I use the insulin pump. I need waist bands.

6. It is a costly disease. I have insurance, but… insulin, pump supplies, doctor visits, test strips, lancets, medications, etc.

7. Mood swings.

8. I resist my inability to "get up and go" when I want.

9. I resist my inability to drive at will. My blood sugar level drops without me realizing it.

10. I resist my inability to concentrate because my blood sugar level drops and rises so quickly.

11. We could only have one child. We love him dearly, but we originally wanted three.

1. I hate having to eat 3 meals a day and a snack. It's always a hastle to stop what im doing and go find food that I can eat.

2. I hate waiting 4, 5, or 6 hours at a free public clinic to see a doctor because I have no insurance (but I also thank God that they are there because I would have no way to afford medical care without them)

3. I hate being tired all the time, sleeping at weird hours of the day, and not being able to sleep at night because my bloodsugar is outta whack.

4. I hate side-effects of the oral medication. (those of you who take it know what I'm talking about)

5. I hate eating vegetables while everyone else in my family is having pasta, potatoes, rice, bread, etc…etc…etc.

6. I hate that instead of new shoes or a new outfit, it get to buy test strips and lancets!!

7. I hate that I could not eat any of my niece's birthday cake. (and i hate that all the kids at the party where asking me why?)

8. I hate when people judge me for being diabetic, like it's my fault!

9. I hate spending a fortune at the grocery store on low-carb, sugar-free, diabetic-friendly speciality food.

10. I hate getting psyched about a new diabetic recipe that I find only to find out it tastes like CRAPOLA!!! (here's a tip: Mashed cauliflowers do NOT taste like mashed potatoes, I don't care what you put in em!)

OK that is all :)

oh i forgot one: I hate feeling like i'm being interrogated at the dr's office about my eating and exercise.

OK now im done

vvanata 2011-05-16 21:42:50 -0500 Report

You are right, there is nothing about it I like either. I hate having to check my sugars 4-6 times a day, I hate when I have highs and can't get them down, hate when I have a low and overcompensate so then I have a high. I hate that I have to count carbs and most things are hard to know so I have to guess. I hate that some foods have a different affect than others. I hate that I dont have a period because we think its my diabetes and therefore can't really get pregnant again. I hate when you go to a party and they have cake and you have to watch everyone enjoy the cake, hate that I can watch someone have an ice cream and they dont have to worry about their body not producing any insulin and I hate that most people talk about type 2 and hardly anyone recognizes type 1. I hate not being able to just eat what i want when I want.

Really, what is there to like about it? The endless checking of sugars, food, weight, labs, along with anything else related .It sounds so magical if you don't have it. Well, ten things I hate the most about having Diabetes:
1. People feeling sorry for you once they find out you have it!
2. The feeling like people are always watching what you are eating as if at any moment ready to take u to Diabetic jail if it is not what they deem as right.
3. The fact that we get to use our bodies as pin cushions and trying to finding a place that hasn't been stuck a million times over.
4. Running on a contant tre-mill of highs and lows.
5.Getting to do one of my favorite pass times going to the doctor. (heh, right)
6. Having to explain to people what it is and what it means. Then seeing looks of sorrow on their face. Maybe, I should start handing out card that says: Yes, I have Diabetes. If you have a computer or know where the public library is USE IT! If you want to feel sorry for me it will result in you being hit in the head with my meter. (Sounds good to me What would your card says?)
7. Looking at labels. I think we know more about food products than the makers do.
8. The fact that it takes a toll on your emotonal well being. I just know I would have married Brad Pitt when he ask me if I had been in the right frame of mind:) or Rob Lowe.
9. The never ending medicaions that we get to take. (Look on bright side there will be a cure someday then we're long gone. I know, I know. I have to keep myself entertained some how. lol
10. It hard! The old saying "what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger." Well, I could be a world class body builder by now. I think we all could give them a run for their money.

I love #7!! That is so true. We don't just read them, we actually have to understand what they are and where those ingredients come from. I should have paid more attention in Chemistry class.

Thank you for all your hate/dislike lists. There are things listed here that I didn't know were connected to diabetes, and now I do. I agree with another post on here. All my dislikes are covered and I learned some new things. This is a fantastic site.

haveing diabetes is bad enough. but being gluton intorrance seems to be worse.
cause that means any carb that is made from a person can't have. they have to eat noodles that are made with rice.that's one that i know they can replace the flour in.it just seems to sound worse the having count carbs. cause i don't think things would tatse the same that way. i'm not a person that can't have flour but
i knew a couple people that couldn't. they told me i was lucky i don't have gluton intorrance. it's a bigger pain to have it instead of diabetes.

10 Things I hate About You ~ Diabetes
1. I hate having to poke my finger twice a day to make sure my glucose is stable.
2. I hate having to get blood work at a lab (especially when the lab tech isn’t good with “hard sticks” like me).
3. I hate having to watch what I eat because the wrong type of food or the wrong amount it can make my glucose spike or crash so hard I end up in the hospital.
4. I hate that I can’t have chocolate every time the urge hits.
5. I hate all the medications I have to take for the rest of my life or I will not have a life.
6. I hate that so many people think that because I am overweight that it is my fault I have diabetes and should be ashamed of myself for making myself sick.
7. I hate having to wear a diabetes alert bracelet in case something happens when I am out in public.
8. I hate having learned from friends’ deaths that death by diabetes is a brutal way to die.
9. I hate that no matter what I do, I will always be at risk for a multitude of illnesses and infections that are caused by diabetes.
10. I hate the knowledge that there is a greater risk of me dying from diabetes than anything else.

nanaellen 2011-05-15 12:10:35 -0500 Report

I'm glad your able to get the help you need. I'm just really frustrated that I can't! I would love NOTHING more than to be able to go back to work!!!! But don't foresee that happening any time soon! I'm supposed to test 8 times a day which is impossible for me at this time. And NOW the hospital is refusing to do the MRI I need to find out what is wrong with my pancreas because I don't have insurance and it costs too much. So I'm right back to square one AGAIN! And like I said to someone else yesterday I'm NOT feeling sorry for myself I'm just plain ANGRY!! I KNOW I have diabetes but I DON'T have to LIKE it!!

ZannaSu 2011-05-23 02:58:55 -0500 Report

I can empathise with the no-insurance issues. I went through that for about a five-year stretch a while back and may be facing it again soon. You may have already tried this, but a lot of the pharmacuetical companies will help you out with the meds if you can't afford them. If you google or go to thier websites there should be a link to that information. I don't like this diabetes gig either. I was diagnosed over 30 years ago and I've never liked it and it just goes on and on.

jeffrey9127 2011-05-13 11:44:47 -0500 Report

These lists are so complete I don't think I could add anything that someone has'nt already listed. I guess we all feel restricted and annoyed by this Disease.

nastasia36 2011-05-13 10:11:13 -0500 Report

Hate is to strong a word for me so these are the top 10 things that annoy me about diabetes (so far-since I am relatively new to this).

1. I find it annoying to actually have to eat three meals and a snack. Pre-diabetes I was generally happy enough eating once or twice a day or so.

2. Not being able to eat things because I cannot pin point the carb count. I really really miss donuts, cakes , cookies, and other pastries from the bakery or friends homes (ie unlabeled baked goods).

3. Using a magnifying glass while I wait for my eyes to settle enough to get new reading glasses. Also the random double vision and blurry distance vision, again because waiting for the eyes to settle before getting new distance glasses.

4. Its annoying to have to put socks on at night so the lotion prescribed to keep my feet healthy does not rub off.

5. It is annoying that almost all the commercial no sugar added items seem to be malitol or sorbitol based and I cannot ingest either.

6. The expense of all the 'accessories' that seem to have come with the diagnosis. Socks, shoes, test strips, special foods, etc etc.

7. Having the cat wake me at 3:30 am by licking my eyelids because she does not like my sugar level and then not being able to go back to sleep after having the 'snack' to fix the reading.

8. Not being able to get into my normal walking routine since I still have not worked out the pre-workout food intake to keep my blood sugar from dipping to 50 in the middle of the workout. The dog is also annoyed by this since she misses daily walks.

9. Not knowing before I was put on mass iv steroids that I had the risk of becoming an instant diabetic from it. But then being dead probably would have been more annoying to my husband, so give and take I guess.

10. It annoys me my diabetic husband seems to be able to ingest anything and not have his blood sugar spike through the roof.

melota 2011-05-13 09:35:57 -0500 Report

10. People giving advice who do not have the problem.

6) Pasta, baked potatoes…need I say more.

Duel 2011-05-14 15:32:10 -0500 Report

Sorry for the late reply James but I guess you beat me to it already. :) Last time I heard some giant pharmaceutical company bought the rights of this and it stalled from there. Maybe they did it to never release it. :(

jayabee52 2011-05-15 16:59:44 -0500 Report

Do you have the name of that "giant pharmaceutical company"?

If that can be verified, then PWD's all around the world can put pressure on them to release it. We can use economic and governmental pressure to make life tough for the company and the officers of the company until they give us what we need. But we don't want to "go off half cocked". That transaction needs to be verified, and then the pWDs around the world can in the words of Maximus in the movie "Gladiator" —-" unleash hell" upon them until they relent.

Otherwise it is in my mind — simply another unsubstantiated internet rumor.

Duel 2011-05-15 17:46:52 -0500 Report

I had read that somewhere a while ago but I was able to dig it up again from another article. it seems Dr.Nelson (the scientist who discovered this medication) had an agreement with a New Jersey company GDPAU for the commercialization of this drug but it's already been a long time since this was said and done and still no drug on the market.

I'm not really keeping my hopes up. A drug like this (if really true)will mean trillions of dollars of losses for diabetes medicine/supplies companies if it ever gets out.

cavie2 2011-05-13 02:20:59 -0500 Report

I have just been on the internet looking this up and came up with numerous pages related to this topic, I typed in; 'nigerian cure for diabetes' try again James and see if this helps. lol

I just want to thank you for going the extra steps to check this out and let us know. I hear of way to many things (supplements/herbs) that are supposed to help, get suckered into buying them only to have absolutely nothing to show at the end of a month of use. I really appreciate you posting about this.

dietcherry 2011-05-14 15:37:25 -0500 Report

dietcherry 2011-05-14 15:42:26 -0500 Report

I read the article James posted yesterday and what confused me was the "cure" is for both T1 and T2. Simplistically, T1's dont make insulin and T2's dont use their insulin effectively so how can one "cure" fix both these problems simultaneously?

Duel 2011-05-14 20:00:33 -0500 Report

I don't know to be honest. I cannot speculate on the technical side of this. All I want is for them to release the drug. I don't care if I become the guinea pig, lol.

My Diabetic Rant
(or, a humorous reality check…)

1.] You took my gnocchi away.
2.] Instead of sugar, I now have to use Stevia.
3.] When I see a cannoli, I have to wipe tears from my eyes.
4:] I can't dunk my Italian bread - stuffed with prosciutto, and hard provolone cheese - into my glass of chianti anymore.
5.] I currently have to go to a medical clinic in order to check my blood sugar (I'm waiting on a new meter).
6.] Instead of potato home fries with onions and peppers, I now eat oatmeal.
7.] When I go food shopping with my wife, I literally have to avoid certain aisles - where the 'good stuff' is.
8.] When we go out to eat, my plate doesn't look like anyone else's.
9.] When I bake a loaf of gluten-free bread, following the recipe to the letter - it still tastes horrible.
10.] Diabetes - you are a great big stinky-head. Take that!

I prefer saying dislike. I dislike diabetes with a passion. I dislike getting sick and tired of taking pills, & and sticking my fingers. I miss sugar but I'm getting used to sugar substitutes, it's better than no sweet taste. I dislike not being able to go to a resturant and ordering normally like other people I'm with. I never knew anyone with diabetes, so I wish I had known more about it. I really dislike the highs, and even more the lows. I dislike the burning and tingling in my legs. I miss junk food. I dislike not being a normal weight. I think that maybe 10 at least close to it.

I would like to add one more thing to my list and to ask if any one else has this problem. I hate getting gas when my BS changes, and it only happens when my BS changes. Does anyone else have this problem. Is it caused by Metformin or does it effect every one. I hate being embarresed by it.
