at one point I thought I could draw up the insulin and put the syringe w insulin in the lunch bag. That was not a good move. The insulin froze inside the syringe and was ruined.

Howdy Jenny!
When I go out for a day or so, I use an insulated lunch bag or box with the frozen gel packs to keep my insulin cool.

If am out for more than 1 day and stay overnight in a motel and I have no way to refreeze the gel packs, I put ice cubes from the ice machine in the lunchbox. Be sure to have a ziplock bag to put your insulin in so the box around the insulin vial doesn't get soggy from the melting ice. I just put the ziplock in my lunchbag before I leave home so I have it with me — just in case.

Blessings to you and yours!
