A meal is planned. Looks like it will be between 4-5 carb servings. Not bad. I eat it and could probably eat 2-3 more the same size. What foods can we use to fill us up and still keep the carbs in line?

I used to mix the vanilla with OJ, tastes just like a creamsicle. I also mixed it with skim milk and the chocolate one is also good.

Before I was diagnosed I'd use the vanilla protein powder in OJ. Tastes just like a creamsicle. Haven't tried it lately, afraid the oj will send my BS skyhigh, but it could be cut with 1/3 water

This is what I found has helped me.

Feb 2009 I was diagnosed with a fasting blood sugar of 366 and A1C of 14.1. Started to eat a salad every day at supper. Also started to eat lots of low carb vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumbers, spinach, pickles and sauerkraut. Started to drink 8+ glasses of water every day.

I then bought a meter and started to test my blood sugar before and after each meal. At first I was testing 2 hours after each meal and when my numbers dropped a lot I started testing 1 hour after meals. I was testing 5-7 times a day. I cut back or eliminated foods that spiked my blood sugar more than 50 points after eating.

By testing I found that foods like bread and most foods made of grains along with pasta, rice, corn, potatoes, oatmeal, cereals, chips, crackers, cakes, cookies, candy, soda, fruits, fruit juices, milk and most foods that contain more than 5-6 net carbs per serving as found on the package label all spiked my blood sugar. Some people can cut back on these foods and some people like me have to stop eating them.

After about 6-8 weeks my blood sugar readings were almost normal levels. After 7 weeks I quit all meds and my numbers continued to get better and better.

I found by reducing and eliminating high carb starchy foods helped me a lot. By adding small amounts of chicken, beef, pork or a hard boiled egg to my meals helped reduce blood sugar spikes also.

Good luck

Not so sure I want to fill up. It takes some time, but it might be better if I didn't and allow my stomach to shrink a bit.

Protein powder! It fills me up but the most significant thing it does for me is it satisfies my hunger pangs but doesnt raise my BS at all! I have been able to cut back on my insulin dosage since I started using it. Some have also suggested Metamucil but I dont have any experience with it.

blueeyes33 2011-05-22 21:08:45 -0500 Report

Hi Diet Cherry What kind of protein powder do you use? Walmart? Thks!

dietcherry 2011-05-23 01:12:20 -0500 Report

Yes I buy the Body Fortress Whey Protein brand for $14.88. The label says about 27 servings using 1 scoop daily but it lasts me more than 6 weeks which is a great deal! This 1 serving fills me up and satisfies my hunger! Kevin aka Kirla posting above gave me the idea. I use it as a meat supplement cuz I have a real problem with blood and bones and dont get enough in my diet.

It does not taste good in Vodka, so don't try that! LOL. I have tried it with water, it was tolerable. Skim milk wasn't bad, but I prefer 2%. I have been learning to drink it slower and not guzzle it like water. After all, it is a "meal".

Okay. The protein powder is not bad. I love it with vanilla fudge swirl and Hershey's syrup. Hard to believe it is so good for me! LOL

dietcherry 2011-05-06 18:07:19 -0500 Report

:) Have you tried it just in milk or water? I love it in milk!!! Never tried in water…
Update: tried it in water the other morning cuz I ran out of milk; it is not as delicious without the milk but still not that bad! Would be great for dieters!!!

Hopieland 2011-05-07 12:16:21 -0500 Report

Protein powder is way cool! It's good in milk and in smoothies, too. 1/2 banna, rice or soy milk, frozen berries and ice cubes all mixed in a blender. Good breakfast drink and the protein powder adds stamina. Gives that "full" feeling without being full and starts the day off with a boost. Now that I've preached to the choir, I need to get my blender going again!!!

dietcherry 2011-05-23 01:30:00 -0500 Report

Hey Hopie! I wish I could have it with fruit but it spikes me too much! I can just use the peels since thats where all the bioflavanoids are and none of the sugar anyway! You got it right when you say the "full" feeling without being full-no big swollen belly from overeating!

I have had experience with metamucil, thinking it would fill me up. I still drink a glass of it in the AM and sometimes one in the evening to try to fill me up, but have decided to take it in the AM alone simply because I want my stomach to shrink, so it doesn't take so much to fill it. — seems to be working — so far

The metamucil has a good side effect for me. I have IBS "A" (alternates between constipation and very loose) and since I've been taking it (now for about 2.5 mo ) the alternating swings between constipation and loose BMs has stopped. I'm a happy camper.

Hi again. Hope you're still practicing those dance steps. Have you ever taken acedolphius (sp) or yogart for IBS. I have IBS and after last surgery, the surgeon said this would help keep bad bacterias in check. I like some of the fiber bars that are low carb. I tried Metamucil, but it caused too many problems for me. This has been a great day, my b/g's have gone from 698 a week and a half ago to 104 today. I don't know how to react to be in the control range again. Take care of you, and have a wonderful weekend.
Hugs and prayers,

jayabee52 2011-05-06 23:05:40 -0500 Report

Thank you for those kind words Nancy. Yes about practicing the steps!

I do use acidophilus pills and have done so in the past. I have also eaten Yogurt with the "Live, active cultures" I have also drank Acidophilus Milk (!)
Jem introduced me to it in CA. She used it when she got "c diff" (Clostridium difficile) from taking antibiotics in the hospital. She used that milk to restore the good flora in her intestines. I used the acidophilus pills when I got the c diff after my stay in the hospital in Nov 2010 and it cleared up in about 1 week (must be the hospital food! LoL!).

But my IBS A didn't stop the monthly swing back and forth until I tried the metamucil. I wasn't trying to control the IBS with it, just trying to give my tummy more fiber so I wouldn't eat so much. I've been now about 3 months w/o having the swings from C to D and back again.

Wow! what a drop! nearly 700 to 104! What did you do?

Blessings to you and yours. Have a GLORIOUS mothers day! (and to everyone else too!)

Part of the reason the butt doctor wanted my fiber intake close to 40g was because of IBS. No problem since then, and no colonoscopy's! Yeah! It hurts getting a camera put up my butt! I agree with you on the need to have the stomach shrink. I think I will wait a bit though until the doctor figures out about my BG being so high.

Jim Edwards 2011-05-05 17:14:57 -0500 Report

I don't get 40 grams of fiber with metamucil, well, I could, but I would have to have 13 servings! I start my day with about 20 grams, All Bran or some of the Kashi cereals are at 10-12 grams per serving. The rest I pick up throughout the day, trying for another 10 at lunch, and leave the other 10 to chance. Trust me, getting 40 g of fiber is not always easy.

tabby9146 2011-05-06 14:20:13 -0500 Report

I like 'some' of the Kashi cereals and snacks too. I try to start each day with about 10 grams and then I find it easier to get at least close to what I need, though I never really get the recommended fiber but I come close most of the time. Might try Fiber Sure or something like that.

If you start with 10, you are doing good. I think the almighty government suggests about 25-30 grams. Mine is at 40 because of colon cancer on both sides of the family. We get the kashi cereals at Big Lots quite often.

I know what you meen ben there LOL LOL
Try peanuts, high fiber low carb worked for me
When I first tried to get off the big carbs ,God that was hard lol. I felt I was always starving, well it seamd that way to me anyway .The nuts helped me get thru it, now I dont eat near as much as I did when I first DX.
It will take time but you will get there .
best wishes

tabby9146 2011-05-06 14:21:25 -0500 Report

yes, they do. When I was diagnosed, I decided to eat a handful of mixed nuts per day, and most days I do. I like almonds, cashews, pistachios and others, but they really do help you feel full. It's amazing what a small amount of them will do. Also pistachios are the lowest calorie, lowest fat nut.

I can't believe you are taking Harlen's side! So everybody is against me! Okay, next time I will only consume 15 cans, or at least only the contents of 15 cans.
Actually, I did get a bag of almonds (which I love), Almond Milk, which I will have to force down a bit at a time, a 2 pound (?) container of mixed nuts, and a 1 pound container of Cashews. I did half the cashews yesterday, and started in with the mix nuts. Now I just need to work them into my day and eliminate some of the other stuff. Monday is my prolonged appointment to try and get to the bottom of my high sugars. Heck, he is probably gonna tell me I have to cut out Snickers Bars! Everybody is against poor little me. Actually, if I was little, I would not have these problems, maybe! Hope you all enjoy your weekend. I will be doing a yard sale at my daughters.

Ok, I went to Walmart and you are right, the nuts do fill you up. Now, I got to figure out what to do with the 20 empty cans and I have to head back to Walmart so I have enough for tomorrow! LOL

Harlen 2011-05-05 17:33:24 -0500 Report

Wait a minute…a 1/2 cup a day? I guess I better just put the 1/2 cup of nuts in a blender with low carb water and hook up a drip line! Or maybe I should get a morphine drip line like my Dad had in his final days. That way I won't care if I eat and if I do care, I won't be able to move to do anything about it! Thanks for the great ideas! LOL In reality, Dad's last days with the cancer were rough, but he did enjoy the drip line and said to me, "You ought to get one of these!". Humor and good natured to the end. I was surprised he remained coherent until he closed his eyes. Wait, this is Mother's Day, not Father's day coming up.

Harlen 2011-05-06 17:50:15 -0500 Report

I would have 4 or 5 at a time when the need was there like I am doing now for quitting smoking .

Gee, thanks, I think. As soon as I saw the repeated LOL, I knew the road was not going to be easy. I am done my 45 carbs for lunch, the can that the tomato juice came in is looking good. I cut my tongue trying to lick out what was left. I am done my cup of yogurt, but my dog has already licked it and I think I will pass. For my final course, I am drinking Walmart's version of Slim Fast. Carbs are not bad, fiber is good, but I think I will pass on the strawberry flavor next time. To us it feels as if we are staving, but that just means our stomach growled!

Harlen 2011-05-05 12:52:12 -0500 Report

lol Yep
one thing you will note is that You will need a scale if you eat packaged food
there is more then they sey in them cans and boxes lol
I can only have 45 grams of carbs a Day so you get to feast lol
I make food at home and I can eat a lot more then if I eat out .
Best wishes

I read that for "normal" diabetics (sorry Harlen) that men are allowed 4-5 carb servings per meal (15g of carbohydrates =1 carb serving) Women are allowed 3-4 per meal. Harlen is special :) Maybe he is a type 1, I am a type 2.
