I have had 3 surgeries in 6 months and am having another in 2 weeks they say the main reason im not healing is diabetes. The initial surgery was for a hernia the seconnd for the mesh from the hernia and the third for an abcess under my belly button, in between this time i wore a wound vac for 10 weeks. i am beyond frustrated, if the main cause of not healing is diabetes and a slight over weight (15-20)pounds at most i am so tired of being bed ridden that has what has caused the weight gain as you can see from my pic. My next surgery is to remove a mass of scar tissue that is peotruding from my belly button which i hope doesnt cause ant complications again and cause use of the wound vac again. HELP is there any one else who has experienced numerous surgeries and they say you dont heal because you are a diabetic???

I just had tests done and they scheduled them 2 weeks apart to give my system a chance to catch up! You don't say how your #'s are? THAT'S where MY problem comes in, my #'s have been through the roof since my surgery in NOV.!! Fortunately I haven't had to deal with longer healing issues. I'll definitely keep you in my thoughts and prayers! Ellen :)

Is there a reason why they are scheduling your surgeries so close together, they know you are a diabetic and that we heal slower because of that reason, but they really need for you to heal before scheduling another surgery, well I wish you the best and my prayers are with you:)

I've had my thyroid removed, appendix removed, stitches on my eye, cataract surgery, fractured meniscus in my knee, and bone spurs in my shoulder. I heal slower than most, but I'm obsessive about keeping the site clean (covered with antibiotic bandages). I also continue moving around as much as they'll allow. It helps to keep the circulation going as much as possible. Ask the surgeon for allowed exercise and do as much as you can. You may need to not do any lifting for a while, but easy walking might actually be encouraged. Good circulation helps move any potential infections so your system can clear it. I also used to get infections very easily (because of a hyperactive thyroid) and we just couldn't keep doing antibiotics. I finally had the thyroid removed because it refused to cooperate. I've always been active and even with the knee surgery, NO WAY was I gonna just do nothing. Good luck. Keep your bs in control and keep your spirits up. THINK POSITIVE.

I'm going through this now, went to emergery room had surgery that night 3-6-11 for a hernia that burst, obstructed bowel had to be repaired, also has mesh over the belly button down left to right adb area Dr. said he has never used such a large piece.
In hospital 7 days 3 days in ICU, came home, went back a week later to take out drains and plugs.
I was cut like a pig.
I have a open wound, home health nurse comes out to change dressing, now their want to put me on a wound vac because I'm not healing I've asked over and over is it because I'm diabetic their say no. I'm to over weight.
I'm slow to heal. My Dr. has removed scar tissue, also an abcess 2'x Do we have the same DR.!!!!!!!
Said I need two more surgeries for the repair other damage that was done, said I was not able to go any more surgery that night it was to much of a danger for me. Nurse is telling me I will need a skin graft plastic surgery.
I'm very frustrated, so I know what you are going though, feeling as well.
I need a knee replacement on top of everything, But I think my knee will be the last of my bucket list.

Best to you, have a Best day!!!
I will pray for you and a speedy recovery.

Sadly, weight does seem to play an important part. I know I carry about 100 pounds too much. My doctor said to get an idea of how much that is, go to the dairy isle and load 100 boxes of butter (1 pound each) into your shopping cart. "That is how much extra you are carrying around. It contributes to your diabetes, your knee issues, your hip issues, and your slow to heal issues". I know this to be true, but dropping it is another matter. I have begun walking, but do not have it up to a daily thing, yet. I wish you the best in your trials, heal well. Jim

LAST MARCH I HAD A SURGERY THATS CALLED A BILATERAL TEMPORAL BIOSPY..[ BOTH SIDES OF MY HEAD …THEY SAID ID BE OK IN A DAY OR TO BUT IT DIDNT GO THAT WAY ..IT TOOK ME ABOUT 2 WEEKS TO GET BACK ON MY FEET … THEN ON APRIL 5TH A MONTH LATER I HAD A CAROTID ARTERY CLEANED WHICH CONSISTED OF A 7 1/2 INCH INSCISION ON MY NECK AND I FELT LIKE I WAS STILL HEALING FROM THE FIRST AND THEN MAY 5TH THEY DID A TOUR IN MY BRAIN TO MAKE SURE THEY COULD GET THERE TO FIX A BRAIN ANURESYM AND TWO WEEKS FROM THAT THEY WENT BACK IN AND PUT A COIL IN IT. I KNOW IT SOUNDS DUMB BUT IT SEEMED LIKE FOREVER BEFORE ID COULD GET TO WHERE I BELONGED. I ALSO RECENTLY HAD A STROKE AND AM LOOKING FOR MORE SURGERY …I'VE BEEN WONDERING IF I COULD DO IT … SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE I'M DEFEATED .. BUT I TRY NOT TO DO THAT , CAUSE I THINK THAT HAS A AFFECT ON YOUR READINGS… AS STRESS SOMETIMES SEEMS TO MAKE MY SUGAR HIGH… I THINK HAVING DIABETES AFFECT YOUR LIFE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE …BUT IN A WAS IT MAKES YOU STRONGER CAUSE IT CHANGES YOUR ATTENTIVENESS TO YOUR SELF …I'M JUST WEIRD … I'LL PRAY FOR YOU. HUGSS

It has been proven by science that we heal slower. Your Dr. will probably say to expect an extra day or two, I quadruple the time. High blood sugar leads to infection much easier and it also slows the wound healing because the cells aren't getting the proper nutrients to do their jobs. So the double whammy is that you can't be as active while healing which will cause the healing to take longer. Best suggestion is to basically demand that they give you suggestions on how to safely exercise and do as much as you can. Its important for your general as well as mental health. You have a lot of support here so take our good wishes with you and keep a positive mindset. View the setbacks as only that, and keep plugging away. Good Luck.

I just had a surgery on this past Monday, for kidney stones. And I'm due to have a surgery on my left knee in the next month or so, for a torn menisus .
Doctors have told me you need to keep your blood sugars under control. before and after your surgeries In order to heal, in a timely fashion.

I have heard of this happening to a few of my friends, it is a slow process but some of them healed faster than the others. This is a true fact that we take longer to heal, just keep in touch with your doctor and let him watch you carefully, which they usually do because they know that you are a diabetic. I am a little suprised at them doing so many surgeries knowing that you are a diabetic, were these emergencies. The reason I question this is because I could not have surgery on my eyes,(two years ago) because then my BS was too high so they worked with me until it was down then I had surgery and had no problem, they kept me in the hospital until it went down and I had no problem. We are all different and we all have different problems, do not worry about the weight gain until you get better, first things first, you do not want stress because that will not help you. You will heal and you will get better. You will hear from others on this site and I am sure someone has or had the same problem, and they will also help you and give you the support you will need, we are here good luck and you will make it, we did…let us know how you are doing keep in touch, Bless You

June, they postponed your eye surgeries because your high BGs raised the pressure in your vitreous humor (the clear jelly-like substance inside your eyeball) That's why we should wait for about 2 weeks after our BG#s are under good control to get our eyes examined for glasses. Otherwise they're out of focus due to the pressure in the vitreous. and the Rx for the glasses is "off" too.

Hi J, you are so knowledgeable. I only know the surgeon was quite concerned and definitely wanted to have the Bs down. My primary doctor always checks any cut or bruise I have to make sure I heal correctly and in a matter of time, he told me all doctors do that to patients with diabetes. As always I thank you so much, by the by I joined another community to learn about weight/obesity and I think I will like it. Bless You & family
