I have been a Diabetic since 1989 when I was 25 but have never counted carbs My doctor retired last year and my new doc wants me to count carbs my A1c has ran 6.8 - 7.3 my last A1c was 6.7 in February. I take 35 units of Lantus at bedtime and 5-15 units of humalog with each meal depending on what I eat and what my bg is before meals. Any suggestions on how to start this carb counting it is so different than what I am use to. I don't understand this carb to insulin ratio. and now since I have been trying this my blood sugars are ranging 250-300. Now I am just frustrated. I don't understand why mess with something that was working.

Its actually pretty simple and when you get it down you should find you have much better control. Best advice I can give is read the book Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner, it will help you understand insulin to carb ratios, how to figure it out and how to count carbs and use it.

Recommend the twelth chapter of The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, by Dr. Rachael F. Heller & Dr. Richard F. Heller, was a bestseller, and the reason why was/is that fact…yours I'm sure is fine, I will check it out, The thought process of a person with extra fat in the body, has extra fat in the head, & when the outward symptoms are so out of balance that the numbers show it, then that would logically produce the conclusion of something must be adjusted to return things to balance, that is the reason for the lifestyle change that none of us want to make. This is only how I've rationalized it in my 'fat' head from the info poured into it by much smarter, and better educated people than me…I'm 6'2', and weigh 265 lbs. down from 278 lbs. a year ago, baby steps do get it there, the more changes in proven positive areas, the quicker the results, and when stroke, heart attack, & death are on the table with the 'good' stuff, my selections become more self-preserving, towards balance, after extreme adjustment of attitude, and many wrong choices of ignorance. Prays for your wisdom & blessings for your life.
