Does anyone else find that there are things you just can not eat or drink because of your glucose numbers going too up or too down? I listen to some diabetics saying that they can eat the "real" candy or cookies or mac n cheese and they have no problems. But if I nibble it…my numbers fly like a firework.

I don't deprive myslef of anytrhing - just partake in moderation. I have an insulin pump which is a godsend. I just make sure that I dose appropriately to the carbs that I am consuming. Some concentrated carbs may give me a spike in my blood sugar but that's a temporary shift wihch correctes itself via the remaining insulin on board. And my latest A1c received last week was 5.8 after using the continuous glucose sensor (have run around 6.2 to 6.5 in the past).

I couldn't tell you the last time I had OJ - I know that the smallest sip can drive my BS PAST insanity! I may do other things that drive my BS up like a rocket but OJ is like the plaque to me.
I take a hit & deal with the EXTREME highs when I do go out & have a cocktail or other mixed/frozen drinks. I don't go out often or be at others hm much so this is rare.

Entertain me for a minute, since you already partake of the grains. The next time your sugar is high, drink 1/4 cup of alcohol, straight or mixed only with regular water An hour later, test your BG again. I think you will find that the problem is not in the alcohol, but in what you are mixing it with. I really do want to hear back from you on this as it is something I am working on. Thanks, Jim

I will confess, I love ice cream. I have got to the point where I do not even bother with a dish. That could mean a few things 1) I eat the entire carton, so why waste a dish! 2) I eat right out of the carton, making sure my wife doesn't see me double dipping. 3) I allow myself all of the ice cream I can fit onto a tablespoon. Regretfully, I choose #3.

Hershey's chocolate syrup over my eggs and bacon, grilled Hershey bars on white bread that has been coated with real butter on both sides so it doen't stick, then a turket dinner with mashed potatoes and chocolate sauce, stuffing, Apple pie,
Followed by chocolate ice cream. Of course, the last 3 are covered with Hershey's!

The power they pack is tremendous. When I lived in Lancaster, Pa I was on the Red Cross Disaster Team. Only responded to 1 tornado in 5 years. So many strange things happened. One was a large JD tractor that was placed on someone's lawn. It came from 5 miles away. The lady said, "We were looking out the window and the JD tractor came out of the sky and was gently put down! The farmer came and drove it home!

lol What a cute story! My poor Weeping Cherry tree cant catch a break-once again its suffered (read the story in my pics section) and my house is probably going to need a new roof.

Jim Edwards 2011-04-20 14:20:36 -0500 Report

That tree must be old! I have never seen one so large. How old was your roof? Was it about time to have it replaced, or did the tornado damage a newer roof?

dietcherry 2011-04-20 15:03:34 -0500 Report

I love my tree! Its story touched my heart and convinced me to buy it…and the house beside it! haha My house has a new addition so there is an old roof and a newer roof; yeah its time for the old to be replaced-it took a beating Saturday-but ideally I'll get the whole roof done.

LOL, I have to say, it is not very clear at all. I made a cake for a chocoholic friend of mine with the goal to make him sick. He loved it!! Yikes.

Jim Edwards 2011-04-20 11:55:10 -0500 Report

The only reason you make him the cake is because you get to lick the bowl and beaters! Although, you do know if you eat the batter before it is baked, there is no sugar or carb transfer! :)

I have a lot of foods that make my sugars go sky high. Real candy and cookies skyrocket my numbers and then im fighting all day to bring them down to me its not worth it. In a case of being at birthday party or something like that i do eat a sliver of cake and i do mean a sliver and usually im ok. Chinese food is the worst for me any kind of chinese sends my sugars on a rollercoaster all night. I hope you will find some things that you like that doesn't do to much to your sugars. Good luck to you.

It seems like just about everything I eat raises my blood sugar. The one thing that I love to eat is macaroni and cheese and when I eat it my blood sugar goes through the roof.. Just thinking about it makes me want to go and make some.

MoeGig 2011-04-16 21:43:42 -0500 Report

One thing that I found that I can have that has a relatively low effect on my BG is a couple of Mrs See's chocolates…each one is mostly chocolate with nuts inside. With a cup of black coffee…makes a pretty good dessert; but no more than 2 after an all protein breakfast. Now, I maintain a low carb diet all day long, so these are a special treat.

Gimpalong 2011-04-16 19:04:33 -0500 Report

I am only allowed to have 60 carbs a day. I love pasta and rice. I know if I eat very much that my BG's are going to go sky high for me. I just have to have some every once in a while. My others likes are watermelon and cantelope. When summer comes, I'll have my cold watermelon in fridge, but I can control the amount. It is just hard being a diabetic. Take care of yourself and I know that we aren't the only ones having a problem with no-no foods. Have a great weekend.

Gripper907 2011-04-16 09:49:41 -0500 Report

Apart from cutting down of foods that raise your BG, exercise regularly. I find that your metabolism improves a lot when you do both. There is need to accept that life changes are a must once you are a diabetic. Also avoid processed foods such as cold cut meats and pre cooked foods as they tend to have to much sodium.

Old School fries with cheese and mushrooms. Thank good news Hubby can sautee mushrooms to perfection. They are the best part of the craving. I have avoided the Old School fries for 6 months, even though they are right down the street about 1.75 miles away.

white potatoes, white rice, most pastas, unless they are whole wheat and have some fiber in them. I am surprised at how well I can eat "one" non whole wheat pasta, and the brand is Ronzoni smart pasta or something like that. It hs lots of fiber, I can make mac and cheese with it , low fat cheeses, and skim milk and I can eat more than I thought I could. I can eat a little white potato or rice, but I usually stay away from it. i would never touch a regular soda. They told us in class that was the one thing we can have none of.

tabby9146 2011-04-15 20:48:24 -0500 Report

just remember those that are new to this, if you have fiber, protein maybe a little fat in what you eat, you can get awy with some things, but having say a pice of white bread alone, or some banana by itself, isnt' a good thing. I can have banana for example when I have the other things too, and just a few slices like in a high fiber cereal.

MarkS 2011-04-18 09:01:23 -0500 Report

So tabby, are you a Type 1 and how well do you count carbs. A banana alone is about 26 carbs, which depending upon how well your carb to insulin ratio has been calcualted, should be well handled by the insulin. I'm not extremely accurate on counting carbs, but definitely do a quick look over my meal to determine the approximate amounts. And if there's fat involved (such as with the cheese from the mac & cheese) you will get the slow burn from those calories. Also, I don't know what your treatment regimen includes, but I'm on my third insulin pump and I can't tell you how its changed my life for the positive.

brandilyn 2011-04-15 18:43:48 -0500 Report

White rice… I have completely cut it out of my diet. It doesn't matter how much I eat. Also, finding out grapes are giving me a hard time too!

Megahit 2011-04-15 17:31:57 -0500 Report

Nuts. I eat everything and now know how to work the insulin to compensate but nuts have been the hardest challenge. If I eat a normal size, I'm fine. The problem is I like to eat healthy during the week and eat what I want on weekends. I love the cinnamin almonds that come in the green container. I can eat half the bottle. Now when this happens I give extra long acting. That seems to help. I still have occasions when it'll still get high. I've been trying to eat a few servings throughout the day instead of all at once when the weekends roll along. That's been a savior because for a while I was thinking I'd have to give up my food loading saturdays.

me too i can't eat white bread only wheat there are so many things cheese is a biggy for me so i stay away from that it can be a blessing or a curse depends on how you look at it do you measure out your food i stay the same i also have a scale i use to measure out the amount of meat i get i sucks at times but basicly i have given up a good portion of what i used to eat have not tasted pizza in two years my thing was indian food or white castle best of luck.

I have my ups and downs. The downs are the ones that scare me. My lantus was raised to 10 units and I give humalog according to what I eat. Got scared when it went to 30 and vision was different when looking at light it seemed to quiver. My GP agreed it was the 10 lantus and suggest I cut down to 9. At night even with a snack it went to 51 once and last night went to 81. Fifty one had the quivering and 81 didn't. I want to lower my A1C but I'm not going to pass out doing it. I hope. I agree with watermelon fruit pizza bread. I never had ice cream but I tempted.

what is water mellon pizza bread like it sounds like to many carbs do you make it with whole wheat bread do you measure out your fruit ? how are you after you eat it just being curious i eat a half of an apple and i see a spike .

lol Those are the things that raise my count. I know they are something I have to watch very close. The watermelon is so tempting on a hot day. The smell the beautiful color and the fresh taste of the mouth watering juice. Yummy. NUTS I know I can only have a very little bit. I think half cup. That's not very much. An apple a day is suppose to keep the Dr. away but in our case it's a different story.

Nonna2Three 2011-04-14 15:20:26 -0500 Report

Oatmeal - that one hits my numbers hard too. At first I thought "How odd, something that is suppose to be so healthy for you and you can't eat it!" But now I work it in on the days that my fasting number is good.

Nonna2Three 2011-04-14 13:45:43 -0500 Report

I can't eat much pasta or potatoes. I love Fettuccine Alfredo - with or without chicken - with or without broccoli, but it will shoot my numbers way up. And I now limit my potato to 1/2 a med size potato at any meal and even then only every other week or so.

But I have not tried real candy or regular ice cream since my dx. I just automatically wrote those off. And I'm okay not trying them even just to "test" them, for two reasons - 1) I have found several sugar-free sweet treats to replace the candies 2) I don't trust my will power.

As summer sets in more I do intend to test a few options for ice cream. But I just have not looked for my replacement yet. And I love sherbet, but I don't know that I have ever even seen a sugar-free option of Sherbet.

But I have found that a lot of foods, as long as they are in moderation, do not send my numbers to the moon with the exception of the Fettuccine Alfredo and the potatoes.

kitcarson 2011-04-14 12:45:00 -0500 Report

you know that you can only have a1/3 of a cup of pasta why are you eating pasta in the daytime? anything with pasta has to be 1/3 of a cup why not have a sandwich why pasta in it for dinner.

Pynetree 2011-04-14 12:34:53 -0500 Report

There are things that spike my BG…Pizza is a big one. But I do eat a bit of candy and if I keep it to a minimum, it doesn't spike me abnormally high…Moderation seems to be MY key on this.
Sparkle is right about reading labels. Some things that you think are OK, have additives, sodium, or sugar alcohols, etc. that make them bad. It is just best to read, know what you're eating, and test, to see how YOUR BODY reacts to it.

CORN! No matter how little or how it is prepared, corn kills my numbers. It is crummy because I love corn on the cob, pop corn, tortilla chips.....Plus, there is corn in 100's of ingredients in foods and now that I am looking for those I can avoid it in other ways.

But I can eat ice cream. Not the loaded ones, but only one is friendly to me. The Bluebell Homemade Vanilla with some nuts on it. Stick to 1/2 cup serving and I am okay. Go figure. LOL
