Diabetic for 18 years and now I am 25 and pregnant…For the 3rd time. My first son was born preemie but at the medical students fault for breaking my water during an exam. My second was born with many complications due to the fact I went into a diabetic coma after my organs had all tried failing onme. He fought a long, hard six months. Discovering me and my fiance were blessed with this miracle about 2 weeks ago, I have just realized that I have NEVER taken such better care of myself and the diabetes. I am determined to have a healthy pregnancy and even healthier baby. I feel so much better with my bloodsugars always under 200, even after meals! Before my sugars were in the 300, 400, even 500's. My fiances' first child, my sons' new brother or sister, my little miracle is my MOTIVATION. Everyone needs it when dealing with lifetime disease. What is yours?

Not really. As soon as they found out I was pregnant, and they seen my bloodsugars were all over the place, they said I'd be on the pump within 2-3 weeks!

This is one of my biggest challenges is finding the motivation to change my life! I am recently divorced and neither of my kids live with me. I have time to exercise but just do not want to. I need help finding that one little something to motivate me because I know my life depends on it.
If anyone has any suggestions, I am open to them!!!!!

I just think of how my 7 year old son would feel, and everything he would have to go through. He already lost his little brother back in 2008, so I would NEVER want to have to put him through something like that again. Diabetes IS deadly if not controlled. Just think if blindness took over,…all of the things you would never get to see and miss out on. Your children do not have to live with you in order for them to go through this. Plus, we need to take care of ourselves so we may take care of those we love! So sometimes, you need to put yourself first and always include yourself in your motivation :)

Recently diagnosed. Trying to control sugar with diet and exercise but my last a1c says it's not working. Feeling low. Don't know where to turn.

What Type are you? Have you tried Carb counting? I just started 2 weeks ago and its made a HUGE difference! Im still amazed!

Tirsha 2011-04-07 21:11:24 -0500 Report

Type two. Yes, I've done it for three months now. My a1c was worse this time than it was the first time. Didn't seem to help at all. How many carbs a day are ok?

Well, everyone is different. They figure how many calories you should have first, by calculating you weight and height with some other numbers. Then from there, they break it down. Im a petite little thing, and they figured that between my needs, and my babys needs (I am pregnant) that I should have 50-60 carbs per meal, and 20 carbs per snack (2x daily). This has really helped me a lot with lower bloodsugar readings and a steadier pattern of numbers.

Sounds like depression, Allison!

You named some wonderful motivations! Are you "down" on yourself, Allison? People love you. Family, friends, a boyfriend! You are special, and worth loving and loving yourself, and unfortunately you don't seem to see it.

May I recommend you see a counselor to help you with your self worth issues?

You just listed 3 different motivations above! Just think of all the pain and suffering your friends and family would go through is something were to happen to you. Plus, we'd be less one AWESOME member here on DC!
