I was a little disapointed since it was up a little from the 5.3 last time. However I had a couple upper respitory things that had been passed around my family the last two months. I knew there were a few days with high readings. At least I learned that I should expect high readings from some illnesses.
The Doc lowered my metformin to 1 time a day instead of 500 twice daily. I told him about Tuesday Night Dinner with Mom (aka The Cake Lady). Especially her belief that every salad had to include marshmallows. He said that it would seem more like a dessert. I explained that the meal normally ended with a cupcake. He suggested I take an extra dose on those nights.
He was really pleased with my weight lose. It has been about 50 lbs since Jan 2010. I have been frustrated because I have hit a wall for a few months.
Thanks for all the help and info from my DC family. The Doc things I am doing really good at this dealing with Diabetes thing. Without your help I'd be less well equiped for the battle.
Next time my A1c will be better. Unless the stupid Summer colds kick my BG.

What seems to work the best is learning about what I can eat and what I shouldn't eat. The BG tests really help to show what food my system cannot handle. Peopl suggest taking a reading before you eat a food, then around 1 hour and 2 hours afterwards. That way you can tell if it affects your BG. Sometimes you may need to cut down the amount you eat of a certain food and then you are able to eat it and not haver a spike.
Sometimes no matter what you do diabetes is hust more difficult to control. You could have more insulin resistance or your body just may be making less insulance. Stress and other medical complications can be causing the higher BG levels.

Up a little, but still sounds like a good number.

You said your doctor told you to double up on your Metformin on the Tuesday Night Dinner nights. That makes me curious because I missed my meds Tuesday and Wednesday nights and my fasting BG was higher than ever yesterday morning, but . . . I recall my doctor telling me (when he first diagnosed me) that the Metformin would take a few weeks to build up in my system. If your doctor understands it to be effective that same night then I wonder if my doctor is confused about it and if the missed Metformin is the culprit.

That puzzled me also about taking a second metformin after eating at Mom's. I thought it was several weeks before they started kicking in as well. The hospitals had me taking one in the AM with breakfast and one in the PM with Supper. That's the way I continued to take them since I had escaped from the hospital Feb 2010. The Doc said Wednesday to take it with my largest meal of the day. That's something I was going to research. He has been an exceptional Dr. in dealing with my more critically important venous stassis and MRSA/cellulites disaster last year.
Also I wasn't happy with how the hospital addressed it when I was diagnosed by them. However we were dealing with the other crisis at the time. So they were much more focused on keeping me alive and healing. At the 2nd hosptial, my Dr. there would just kind of shrug and say perhaps when I asked questions about whether not enough protein with my breakfast made my BG higher at the lunch reading. Since days I had no eggs with breakfast (the only protein option those mornings) I needed insulin before lunch.Rarely did I need it other times of the day. Since then, from trial and error, I figured out I seem to do best with around a 2 carb to 1 protein ratio.

Thanks to imsuzie2 I think I understand why my Dr. said what he said.

Here's the link to her discussion from today

Her info really jogged my memory. Several times last year I stopped taking metformin for a day before surgery and after the surgery until I was allowed to eat regular food. I had that info locked away in my brain in a different compatment. It seems that after the initial time of kick starting your liver takes affect your liver becomes mor responsive on a daily basis. It is more complex than that just my shorthand way of thinking.
Thanks imsuzie2. I hope lots of people read her discussion.

That respiratory cold really hurt me. My BS were in the 300's ! But I did do the sick day guidelines. Good job on the A1C. I think my Doc's would be bug eyed. My last A1C was 7.8 up from 7.3. Again Great job !!!

Thanks. Yes, those colds sure can mess things up. Was your higher A1c after a month with the cold? That could have been why yournumber was .5 higher.

Well to tell the truth I think I cheated on some of the weight loss. I had three surgeries last year and so had a few days of liguid diets before each one. The last one I had to wait 4 days after the surgery befor they allowed me solid food. I am not planning on using that method ever again.
Your Ac isn't so bad considering your pancreas isn't functioning correctly. Plus adjusting to insulin can take a while from what I hear others saying. I'm sure you'll be getting a lower reading next time.
If I had skipped some of the treats maybe I'd be closer to the weight I want to be than I am now. You will probably reach your goal long before I manage to drop another 10. I keep finding those same 10 lbs every time I've lost them since October. It's getting annoying.

Good job, specially since the cake lady is always in your hair. That shows your great will power.

Yes, The Cake Lady loves her carbs! This last Tuesday Night at Mom's it was her and I. Several were ill and some were working and some were exhausted from working. We had pork loin, green beans (with lots of butter) and a baked potato with cheese. She thought we might need bread, but I managed to convince her the potato would be plenty. Somehow I managed to be 109 1 hr after eating and 99 at 2 hrs after. Then she brought out the Molassses cookies we had baked last Saturday. She does let me say "No thank you" when offered dessert. But it is so very hard when the cookies are my very favorite ones. :(

I am still waiting for the book. You know, it could be a cook book that is loaded with the cake lady stories. I'm telling you...it would be a hit. LOL

Once my brain starts working better I might maage to write better. Too much stress and anesthesia recently. Before last year hit me I was working on an idea about Grumpy Disabled Guy (my husband) and Helper Monkey (myself). Hit a snag in that I tried to draw a simple caricature of a helper monkey. That's when I realized my drawing ability isn't really good. In fact at times it is non existent.

So send me a pic and let me do it for you. I have a little experience in that realm. In fact all your "characters" could be quite fun to work with. LOL

I might take you up on the offer. I was thinking of finding a way to make an internet business with a helper monkey theme T-shirt and greeting card. Maybe we could figure out a way to do it and be partners.

I bought an A1C test kit March 13 and it was 5.9. Not good since the last one I did in September was 5.2. Fasting was up some and in general my number haven’t been dropping below 90 much. I made some changes and they’re starting to drop a little. Still got some ways to go to get them down to where they should be.

I found when I quit the meds my numbers just kept getting better. Great job on the weight loss. I lost a lot when first diagnosed. Gained most of it back over the last 2 years. My numbers are doing well even with the weight gain. When taking the Metformin I wasn’t really hungry much. Had to force myself to eat a chicken breast or fish just to keep my calories above 1200 for the day. Great job over all with the weight and blood sugar control.

Did you have any sick days through the time the A1c covered? I really think those Winter bugs got me. In Oct. I had a 5.3. Comparing my AM Fasting BG for the last 6 months, those sick days had real high readings for me. Then I continued to be higher all day. The Dr. said it was a good A1c, anything below a 6 was ok. I want to have a 5 if I can.
Congrats on seeing progress on lower numbers with your changes.
