2 weeks ago my Hubby and I packed up our daughter and house and moved from a good sized city (Bellingham, WA pop about 75,000) to a very small town called Lead, SD pop about 2000. In Bellingham I had some wonderful medical option for my diabetes, but here in Lead there are about 3 Drs…of course there is the big town of Spearfish about 20 miles from here that has a pop of 18,000 or so, they do have a few more doctors there…

I grew up in this area as did my parents before me…I didn't realise how much I missed "home" until we came back…I can let my child go play and not have to worry as much as I did before…of course with a small town comes the everyone knows everyone and their kids syndrome…lol

I'm just trying to figure out if I just doomed myself because of the lower medical access here, or if maybe it was the best thing for us…

Does anyone else live in a small town like this?? If so how do you deal with it??

Sounds like everything is working out for you and your family. There is a LOT to be said about small home towns. You are already getting your dr's lined up and that alone is a major blessing. Enjoy my friend and welcome to your new home.

Thanks to everyone that posted back on here…

I just wanted to share the news that I just got back in touch with the Pediatrition that I had growing up and she recommended someone local here for me to see…got an appt for next week. The best part is that my mother is a RN and used to run the ER in the next town over, and I was able to call her and find out about this Doc…she says he is awsome…so I'm hoping all good things!!!

Blessed Be

I posted a doctor review site,, in a previous discussion because I think it's a valuable research tool to find and share good and bad experiences with the medical community. You may have to search outside of walking distance to find a reputable doctor but once you do, you will some peace of mind. In addition to doctors, begin now to evaluate the best hospitals for any current or future medical necessities. It's wise that you are thinking ahead. Oh, and, hey, congratulations on your move to a safer and saner location!!!

I live in a town smaller than the one you just moved to, the care you get really depends on the doctors there and the knowledge they have as well as your ability to travel.

We have a few doctors and right now that's enough for my diabetes care because I have the internet and all of the people here at Diabetic Connect as my support group. But if I need more intensive and thorough care I'm going to have to travel 30-40 miles for it and for some people that's fine. I personally hate it but then that's not because of doctors or anything I just hate this area and want to move, lol.

I'm not meant for small towns even if I can get decent care here.

Thanks everyone…there is another town of about 50,000 only about 45 miles away, so I can go there if I need to…I grew up here, but at that time I wasn't Diabetic…and ya I agree small towns are much better…it took me forever to get over the idea of driving in a town bigger than 50,000…LOL…give me dirt roads and 2 lane highways anyday!!

I've lived in a small town all my life. Plenty of good docs around though. And Philly is 15 mins away if I need it.

Good luck on the move…new house = new Dr.'s, I say try the local Dr.'s, if you don't care for, or trust them, then switch. But with the on-line access available today you are not doomed. Sounds to me like a good move…happy for you!

Hi. I live in a smaller town that's outside Los Angelas about 45 to an hour away. For the most part I use the doctors here. Of corse this town is a WHOLE lot bigger than the town you live in. If your comfortable with the doctors in the town id go to them. It doesn't hurt to give them a try! If you are not satified with them then do the drive. I wish you the very best and hope you are very happy with your new town! Moving is always hard espically to a different town! I'm in the process of moving now but within my same town. Its so much work! I hope everything works out well for you!

I have to dirve 30 miles to my doctors. Of course the nearest grocery store is 12 miles away!! I don't mind the drive so I can leave somewhere I love!!
