I have been on disability for a few yrs myself.. it all first started not from diabetis but from ptsd i suffered from an explosion I was in.. I suffered a bad falshback at work and was sent home.. than taken off work.. this only added to my depresion. I attempted suiccide, than following up on a back injury I had I found out about the DDD disease in my back with mutiple hurniated dicsc as well as the diabetis. It was a very long process for me.. turned down at first.. won my first hearing than reversed decision by the apeal office at soc sec.. than over another yr had another hereing and won that one also.. have been on dissability since.. best advice i have is never give up

I am currently trying to get disability, and was glad to see I am not the only one going thru this ordeal. It has been very hard and stressful. There are days that I just want to give up,but this site has made it worth continuing. Thank You All So Much

Are you using a lawyer to get yours. I had to get one after I was denied. It made the process less stressful because he did all the work. I just had to have forms signed, and get alot of xrays and mri resuts to him. I wish you luck. How long have you been trying?

Got another rejection letter in the mail yesterday. I also received a letter from the law firm that has been helping me that advised me that it's time to get a hearing before the judge. I am in the process of getting all my "evidence" together and will set up a hearing. I am trying to stay positive and hopeful since this is just one more step. One good thing though was that when I was feeling a little down and not sure if I should try again to work a part time job (not advised by my doctor's) I got a call from my best friend from childhood. Haven't heard from her in 10 years and she called up out of the blue to tell me she was thinking of me and just knew she had to try and call me, she wasn't even sure the number she found in the phonebook was mine but felt she had to try and reach me. Crazy huh? God sure does work in mysterious ways.

That is great about your friend. I had to get an attorney. And since they do not get paid unless you win, trust me they will work hard for your money. Mine was great. i do not know where you live but 3 years ago they were introducing a new thing were it was all done on the computer. My lawyer had everything, all my evidence and x rays and doctor notes put on a cd and when we got in front of the judge, the judge popped it in his computer and we had one and it was all so very efficient. And the judge asked questions off of it and i could see what he was talkign about. I had hearing in February and got my back retro pay check in September. First monthly check in October. So Good luck to you.

I went to the Dr. today and was diagnose with bi-polar 2. Which is mainly on the depressed side. I wonder with all of my medical conditions and having bi-polar if I am eligible for disability. I know financially it really would help.

You have a good chance of getting it. But remember most people are denied the first time and have to get a lawyer. If I was you I would try.

OH, SSI may be better then. I have mainly went to college and stayed home and taking care of my baby. I have so many health problems I think they would be hard to take care of or tolerate at work. Plus it seems I am always having to go to the Dr. or have a test. Unfortunately.

When I went to the hearing for my disability appeal with my lawyer, there was a career person there that was asked was there any jobs I could do with my disabilities like I had done before and she said no. Also my doctor had to fill out a form and one of the questions was during a typical month how many days of work would I miss because of disabilities and pain and doctor put 10 or more and those 2 sealed the deal for me, my attorney said. Been on now for over 3 years. plus got back 3 years of retro pay from the last time I was able to work. hope that answered some of your questions.

I have been on disability for at least 15yrs. have autoimmune disease affects all parts of your body, mitral valve problems, strokes, all the things you get after you get diabetes I got them first. Very grateful for it. I tried to go back to work 2yrs ago but the stress and the long hours was just too much and I had to quit.

Go to www.socialsecurity.gov they have a list of some of the qualifications to be able to get SSI. I am in the process myself. I doubt I get it but at least I am going to try. I have diabetes, neuropathy, severe headaches, and lymphedema and irregular heartbeat. But you can't hardly get SSI anymore. I do receive it however on my disabled son.

2008-12-06 15:31:26 -0600 Report

I suggest you go to, or contact, the nearest Department of Health and Human Resources Dept., which is a state agency. In your state it may go by another name, but at least you should go and see what they say. You could possibly be eligible for SSI. It's at least worth a try. I also get alot of free services from the local health department. It wouldn't hurt to check with these places. Best of luck!!

Mary,
you can do the whole thing online and stop and come back later if you need too. But you need to have information about how many times you have gone to the hospital and what tests were performed and what specific tests your doctor has performed. You need to tell your doctro what you are applying for because they will call him or send him a letter. I had to get an attorney and the form my doctor filled out was what got me my disability.

I have been trying since July to get SSI Disability, for now I am receiving state aid but have already been denied once on SSI and have had to file an appeal. Sometimes I get very angry since I am told by three different doctors that I am unable to work due to my Diabetes & Bi-polar issues. I am not even allowed to live alone. My brother has also applied for SSI for his back problems and has been evaluated by a psychiatrist as well as had a physical exam. I haven't even been scheduled for more that an initial interview. My psychiatrist tells me to be patient that many of her clients have had to appeal numerous times but I get very frustrated. My mother has been on SSI Disability since 2000 and was approved within 3 months. Yes her condition is more severe than mine but she was told that she could still work part time. I have been told that I can't work at all and that I am never to be alone. This really depresses me sometimes as I am only 30 years old and want to have a life of my own. MUST remain positive though. I am still alive and will eventually get control. I just hate having to get help from my family just to get by. Some of the many prescriptions that I take are not covered by the state medical card and if samples are not available I have to go out of pocket to pay for them. Also the card only covers 3 test strips a day and I test up to 10 times a day. Thankfully my parents and grandparents are helping. I am just praying for more options.

I have diabetes and bi-polar and depression. I am not on disability because I don't want to fight the powers that be…I am not working at this time but am still looking. I get help with my bi-polar from the manufacturers… almost every drug can be rec'd free, just google the name of the drug and ask who the manufacturer is…once u find out go to their website and investigate their free programs…It took me less than a month to recieve for free, my seroquel and depakote…good luck

Yes, this is true. They will not pay your bills or your Dr's. if you do nnot qualify. It has nothing to do with how much you have paid in, what matters is that you have worked long enough (enough quarters). Once you have worked enough quarters to qualify, the amount you pay in doesn't matter. Where the amount you have paid in matters is once you are declared disabled, how much they will pay out to you in a monthly stipend.

I was on SSI which is for those who didn't work. I have never been able to work. When my husband got on Social disability for his heart. They took away my money. Now we are left to try and live with so little money. It is very hard on those who could not work. It is like they want to punish for not working.

how long have you been on it?

2008-12-30 11:23:05 -0600 Report

I received disability in 2006. It went thru the first time around. I have several medical problems, so I think that is why I was able to get disability so quickly. However, I didn't get my insurance started until Sept. of 08. I had my disability checks for two yrs before my insurance started. Until then everything was out of pocket. The government in their profound wisdom makes you wait for two yrs. after your disibility checks start to start your Medicare. Why? I don't know. Sorry it took so long for me to reply. I've had alot on my plate the past few weeks.

Actually, if you have retro back pay like I did, your medicare will start right away. I got to go back 3 years from when I could no longer work.

My medicare disability checks started right away, it was my insurance that didn't. There was no way around it, believe I tried. Anyway, I have the insurance now, so I'm happy.

My brother didn't get approved right away but he got a lawyer and kept trying until finally approved. He also has a daughter with special needs that is on too. She attends special classes at school 11 years old. Please hang in there and don't give up!
