I'd like to introduce the research project of a young lady who I have been working with for several months on diabetic research and awareness projects and programs. Lauren is a grad student. This is a legitimate project and Lauren has my support. I hope you'll have hers … Here is her cause:

Hello everyone!

I am a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University recruiting group members with type 2 diabetes to take a 30-45 minute survey. The purpose of this research is to evaluate a peer-based mentoring service rooted in an online social community for type 2 diabetics. The service is the result of previous research I have launched. I am trying to determine the strengths and weaknesses of this service and community.

My research study involves a 30 minute online survey reviewing a prototype

You will be entered into a lottery for a $50 Amazon giftcard

Thank you all for your help in this process.

Thank you!

Thanks Lauren … I just wanted to share with others that your professor was impressed at how many more responses you'd received than was expected. That, dear friends, is because of YOU!!!

I also want to thank the diabetic connect community for assisting Lauren in this project. When I first started communicating with Lauren several months ago, I told her about this site being the BEST … and you guys are proving me right with your willingness to help. You guys really are like family and I just want to say THANKS.

What are the parameters of your survey? Is this a single blind or double blind survey? Not to mention, how much of the participants privacy is maintained? On the internet, where it is so easy to obtain personal information about a person, I do not feel "safe" in participating in a survey that should have participants who are anonymous.

lchapman
lchapman 2011-03-26 12:11:11 -0500 Report

All participation is anonymous. No one is required to participate if you have any concerns but I would of course appreciate any participation. The only piece of identity asked is an email if you would like to enter the raffle for the gift card and that is again voluntary.

this is a Q and A , not a sales pitch . You were not asked to buy anything . Poeple who know nothing about it will get a idea of how its set up .

So either this is a survey…or its a means of advertising as you say spreading the word. I think it is advertising so why say its a survey when truly the questions are phrased to sell you. I am suspect of anything that does not come out clear straight forward and honest. That is simply not right

This web site/mentoring service will not actually be launched. It is my graduate thesis project, based on a year's worth of research. The purpose of the project as a whole is to explore to learn about how individuals with chronic illness and their caregivers leverage the social web to support themselves.

Even though the brochure may seem realistic, the survey is a mock up so that it feels real enough for the idea to be tested. If you have any concerns about the survey, remember that no one is required to participate. Of course I would appreciate any participation, as it will be a great help to academic research on type 2 diabetes.
This is a study being run from Carnegie Mellon University. The IRB approval number is: HS09‐617. If you have any questions, the study contact information is:

I do not believe you. This is very much a sales presentation for another site.

I DO NOT BELIEVE YOU or you would have been honest in the first place and you would not be gathering emails. The questions are all leading sales questions

Your student status does not change the nature or direction of the leading questions you ask that lead toward a promotion of sale of another site

pixsidust,
without facts you have made this person into a monster or fiend. If you don't want to participate just say that. Name calling is not called for. Please understand, I understand being taken for a fool. I'm still paying for asking for help with foodstamps, and free food or meds when we were out of money. The people continue to send me e-mails (over 500 this month alone. None are legit. Si I undrstand. Sometimes you have to have faith in your fellow woman (or in RayT).

I agree with you, Guardianstone. I can understand people wanting to be cautious of ill intention and scams, question it, and then just move on … but to slam a website that doesn't even exist by coming back to track its activity??? This is a voluntary survey/research project to help with the diabetic community. As a diabetic, I completely support the mission.

Thank you both. You do not have to leave your email in the survey either, that is voluntary. If you do leave your email, the only email you will receive will be if you win the $50 giftcard, and that will be a single email with the Amazon code.

I can see where you're coming from but this project is completely voluntary and I am simply helping a university spread the word and gather information. I have been working with Lauren for several months now and this is the final stages of the project. I wish you were around for the initial surveys that probed into our lives, fears and frustrations, and attitudes about online and offline support.

In my opinion I belong to 5-6 support groups and believe that each have their own strengths and weaknesses. I am not feeling lured to join or leave any support site that I belong to. There's not a chance that any site (new or existing) is going to take me away from the "home" that I have found here with wonderful people (like yourself).

If this project is a ploy to create the world's greatest and only diabetic support group then I wish them all of the best but for now you guys are stuck with my sense of humor and sense of adventure and ME.

And for the record I am not affiliated with Lauren, Carnegie Mellon University or any group. I'm just a crazy middle aged man hoping that we can all spread the word about diabetes, diabetics and our experiences to help others.

"..a peer-based mentoring service rooted in an online social community for type 2 diabetics. "

Hi lauren,

I'm type 2 and I'll be glad to help.

Got wind of this on Diabetic Connect, a peer-based mentoring service rooted in an online social community for type 2 diabetics. "

Wait. What? I've gone recursive!! Help!

Sorry RayT721, couldn't resist an opportunity for a bad, pun-like joke. Am contacting the young lady after this post.

Larry

I would encourage you to email Lauren at her address above to ask. She's a very approachable young lady. Even if you are not eligible for the study, I would think your experiences, fears and frustrations could still be beneficial to her research. I am not affiliated with the school or study in order to answer you.
