Fairly new diabetic, long time living with chronic pain & controlled high blood pressuer. Now with a cold, this is day 3. Felt great until I went to the hospital for an MRI, maybe I picked up something there.

I went to the doctor because I just didn't know about mixing medicines. I forgot what they told me in diabetes classes about getting a cold. He ruled out several medicines, but I forgot to ask about what happens to blood sugar. Mine is running a little high 135. I know my blood pressuer is high because of being sick.

Was anyone told what to look out for when a diabetic gets a cold???

If all else fails, call the pharmacy and ask the PHARACIST..they are aware of drug interactions it's a good place to start

Look in your pharmacy for HBP meds and for sugarless cough syrup.

I know, but I am already drinking (2) 1/4 cups of Vodka (Peach or Mango flavored) to drop my BG when it is over 200. My Gramom's "cure" for colds, and almost anything else was to put 1/2 cup of whiskey, 1/2 cup of lemonade or orange juice and either heat it up a bit, or put it in the blender with ice. After 3 or 4 of these, I didn't care if I had a cold! And I was only 8!

Thanks, Cold is getting better but it's still in my voice, I took a shot of whiskey & it cured my sore throat (learned that one from my dad)
But my blood sugar went to 77 which is low for me, so I ate a cookie & it went to 135

So it's going better now.

thanks for all your help

This may surprise you but alcohol drops your BG! A 1/4 cup of alcohol can drop your BG be over 100 points in an hour, so you need to be careful.

Hope your cold is feels better soon.
Many people will have highs, many people will have lows, and many people have highs and lows. I seem to go for the rollercaoster ride.
It is very important to drink lots of water. For me I need to eat several small snack like meals throughout the day. I tend to forget to eat aand drink when I have a cold. However I never forget to complain about how miserable I am. Fortunately the other week I had laryngitis for two days and my husband got a very lucky break.

There are many syrup formulations that offer sugar free options, as well as sugar free cough drops. I do know that some decongestants (especially ones with pseudoephedrine) do raise blood pressure. That's what I've got just off the top of my head. Hope you are feeling better soon!
