Not finding any way to contact a moderator for this site,
I resorted to creating this discussion.

Anyone accessing this site should be made aware that the quality of information
here must be researched critically before it is implemented.

While the majority of the articles & videos are good information there are
some that are questionable as to content and source.

In short; you should take anything here with a grain of salt.
Look into both the data and the source before you use any recommendations, practices or products.

Good point and it's applicable to almost any site on the net and most of what is on TV. These are very powerful but unfettered media and I doubt 1 grain of salt is sufficient. I wrote my first code in 1967 so I know something of the small screens power. Not that I've every used it, LO(notso)L!
That having been said there's a lot of good ADVICE here at DC, but it's just that, really good advice from really great people. Most of whom, I'm sure feel like you — one should never implement anything that hasn't been run by your Medico.

Because this is a community contribution site it is a very good idea to take the information found here with ta grain of salt. We all have opinions and you should definately consult your doctor when making significant changes in your care. However this community is great to talk about how you feel and share what works best for you.

If you have any concerns feel free to flag an item that you feel doesn't belong on the site or you can ask any of the advocates.

Good evening to everybody,

This group discussion has been very enlightening to me. And I totally agree with those who think James makes a great contribution to DC. In fact, he has come to my rescue many times when I didn't know what to do with certain technical issues.

I also agree with those of you who say that sometimes there are remedies who work for some people but may not work for others. Here is an example:

This morning I was teaching a nutrition class at a clinic and a lady told me that when her blood pressure goes up she drinks half a glass of Coke with a few grains of salt and in a few minutes her blood pressure is down. Thank God she told me this before the class started because I don't think I would have wanted to share this with the group and encourage this behavior. But it sure works for her!

However, health professional have an obligation to present people with information that has been proven to help the majority.

I was under the impression (as some of us have mentioned) that this is a support site. People who are experiencing the same condition, especially with the emotional impact that diabetes hails at us. I was also under the impression that one of the "rules" of this site is that we are not allowed to give "advice" to others, rather express our individual opinions and / or making suggestions. Often, I have noticed, the suggestion is to connect with one's physician.

I believe with the videos and so on, you take what you want or need from them and again, consult your physician regarding its relevance to you.

The advertising, well, it isn't going to go away. :) Again, you take from it what you need. One has a choice as to whether or not an advertisement is followed or ignored.

In spirit I agree. But, when the info given is known to be flat wrong or worse detrimental, don't we, as a community, have an obligation to at least attempt to inform those who are inexperienced?
Is that not what a support group is about?
Do we really want a community that is known to turn a blind eye to, or even "seem" to endorse, ineffective or detrimental practices?
Cinnamon was mentioned here as an example of an alternative treatment for high BG, most of us are aware that this is not just a "feels good" therapeutic.
It actually works, & is backed up by good science! Chromium picolinate is another supplement known to work. But, many of these "miracle" cures depend on both of these to "work," fooling a more naive person into believing in and buying overpriced bunk, when they could achieve the dame thing for $10 a month.

As a professional, I cannot, and will not, give medical advise in this environment. I can however make recommendations for or against practices and treatments.
As a matter of fact, I am bound by oath to "do no harm," & I believe that includes letting someone know that they are, or may be, receiving bad "advice," or just being "ripped off."

I am not a strict stickler for main stream medicine, in fact I started my journey as a practitioner of holistics!

I am deeply sorry if this offends anyone, but my statements are not intended to disparage this community. They are only well intentioned suggestions for improvement…

I for one likes reading what others find that works for them…My Dr and I talk about it,,,and we take it from here..remember It is your health you are caring about…do not try anything without thinking about it all the way. the good and bad . You have to be the one that thinks for you…thanks.

You mentioned "some articles and videos" on this site are questionable. Would you be more specific as to which of these you are referring. I know I would like to know and I am sure others here would benefit from having that information as well. :)

Thanks for all the input here. And I'm sorry for not weighing in earlier. In the few minutes I had to check in over the weekend, I ran into some problems with my internet service.

Anyway, I feel like everyone has done a good job summarizing what we're trying to do here.

I do want to clarify a couple of things. First of all, we certainly don't make any money off links posted in comments or as "News." Our advertisers are clearly in banner ads or in the Products & Services section. If you ever run across links that are clearly commercial in nature (meaning they are trying to get you to buy a product) then please flag them as inappropriate and we'll deal with them.

Second, we do allow members to talk openly about any traditional or alternative treatments they have tried. (Many discussions on here about cinnamon as an alternative treatment are good examples.) As long as the poster is not posting the comments for personal financial benefit, then we welcome the input and the open debate and discussion.

I'm happy to answer any questions about specific posts or comments.

As much as I agree with this statement when it comes to the good old internet and such. But as with anything you take what you believe and or expierence, personally I find great input here on Dc, come to trust many people in there sucess's and failures.
I also have made a great friend that we have connected in "the real world" lol.
It's just like watching the 11pm news they say coffee is bad for you, then the other channel says coffee is good for the heart. But here in DC as a member I trust a lot of people here, and if I feel its questionable I check it out, or above all I see my doctor almost every other month and I go by his direction more than anything.

AuntieBear 2011-03-21 02:59:32 -0500 Report

If I believed everything that was posted on the internet: I would not sit on a toilet seat (in a public restroom) for fear of being bitten by a poisonous spider. I would not sit on a toilet seat at the welfare office because that is how you get pregnant. I would never reach into a coin return on a vending machine because there is an aids infected needle in there. I would refuse to lick an envelope because it is either laced with roach poop or LSD. very dressing room mirror is a two way mirror so some pervert can check me out when I am changing clothes. In short, if I believed everything I have read on-line I would be coering in a corner of my apartment afraid to breathe.

Having said my somewhat sarcastic reply let me add this. I agree with you on the grain of salt. I also believe in research, research, research!

Learning as much as you can about your illness is imperative to controlling, releiving and hopefully reversing whatever is wrong with you. One of the easiest ways to get that info is on the web. There is a humongous amount of information at our fingertips.

It is important to know where the information has come from. That is why we go to doctors and Medical Educators. It is also why there are many reputable medical sites online. It is all a matter of putting forth a little bit of effort into your search for the truth about whatever you are looking for.

Take Care,

On your friends list you have built in access to reach the system admin and they are all very receptive to member opinions and concerns. You are quite right in the quality of information, not only here but all over the online and offline world. In the case of diabetes, I believe that what works or doesn't work for one person will not work for another. There are people who are able to eat pancakes or ice cream or whatever while others cannot. There are people with positive and negative stories to share. The age old expression, "you can't believe everything you hear" is most certainly applicable here and is a good point for discussion. Thank you for sharing it.

Howdy DOW. Welcome to DC!

If you're looking for a moderator or administrator for this site you may want to email John Crowley. He is one of the first friends you had already when you first logged on to DC. Go to your profile page and click on his name and his profile and his profile will come up and to the right of his picture click on "send a message". Share your concerns with him too.

I've been here on DC nearly every day for over 2 yrs. I've seen stuff I can't and don't agree with posted here. And I've seen my share of salespeople spamming the site with this "Amazing" "Miracle" product which "Cures" diabetes. Those salespeople and their spam do not usually last very long. Sometimes on a weekend, the spam will stay up during the weekend, but usually it will be gone sometime on Monday. The administration seems to run a tight ship in that regard.

Some of that "questionable" information may come from us who are walking the walk of this condition called "Diabetes" ("DM"). Some ways people discover for controlling our Blood Glucose numbers ("BG#s") is puzzling to me. But they claim it works. And sometimes one has to check to see if it works for oneself by trying it, as not every person with DM responds the same way to the same input (meds, foods, drinks, excercises). So one researches further.

Your point is well taken, DOW, at least by me. This is the internet. One can't accept everything here uncritically.

But there is a different side of DC too. The side that is expressed in places like the discussion boards. People who are in the "trenches" fighting the war with this condition called Diabetes. People who are discouraged, and confused, and frustrated, and in denial, and who are on the verge of giving up. I personally have felt many of those things. And I have received support and encouragement from many people here. I've also received a kick in the britches when I needed to get back on the straight and narrow. And it is this fellowship of this "band of brothers (and sisters)" which kept me coming back here for over 2 years.

I have been on several diabetic websites, and IMO this is the best one around. This is the one on which I spend the most time, and effort. I wish this could have been around when I was first Dx'd. I might not have the level of diabetic "challenges" I have today. But it is what it is, and I am glad to be here now.

Praying God's blessings on you and yours.

James Baker

Couldn't put it any better than myself. DC is the best if anything it is a great way to vent, talk to someone, get ideas, share personal sucess's and opportunities etc. Got a great friend out of it, my new big brother I would call him.

So very well put! In my approx 5 weeks I have found some real good here. Diabetes is not a one shoe fits all. The videos etc… are simple offerings not concise findings we will back up and guarantee. How can we as we all are different? They can be extra areas, for thought, investigation and consultation, then find what works for you. Even the most tested learning tools will not work for everyone. And always consult your doctor.

Besides Dogofwar where else are you going to be able to talk to good people and a fine man like James Baker here. Personally I am blessed.
I get nothing but Joy here. This is a comfort and knowing James is here makes it even more so!

This site has been a wonderful source of support for many many people. Here we share our own expirences with our diabetes. We always recomend speaking to their own doctors reguarding treatment plans. Before you are so quick to put this site down why don't you look at all the positive things this site has to offer! For me this site has been a GOD send! These are the most careing and compassionate genuine people I've ever encountered! This site helps many many people daily. No one makes medical desisions for any one here. We simply support each other and share expirences! This is a wonderful site and it helps people daily! I don't understand why you have a problem with that! If you have followed ANy of our posts you would realize we ALWAYS suggest that the people seek medical advice from there doctors. We are only shareing support and personal expirences here! This site is a wonderful place that diabetics can come and get support and gain friendships and there is NOTHING wrong with that!!!
