good question…I worry about all the sweeteners we are using. I don't want cancer! Are any of the sugar substitutes safe? I've even heard of aspertame deaths!

I use Splendar and enjoy it. I didn't like Truvia (it had an aftertaste to me) or most other artificial sweeteners. I've never had any issues using Splendar.

Interesting comments about Splenda. I have noticed no affects from it and I use it. My daughter doesn't like it but she has nothing to compare it to like saccharine (yuck!) or aspartame (who knows what that stuff's doing to your insides). But I am sure I would be better off getting used to less- or non-sweetened beverages.

Just F.Y.I, and I am not on their payroll, we bought agave nectar. 1 tbs of Xagave has 12g carbs vs. 8 in table sugar. The differences are: it's much sweeter so less is needed (about half), and the rate of absorbtion is lower so lower spikes in BS, especially with blue agave (it varies with the brand due to the ratio of fructose to glucose). The fructose absorbs at a lower rate according to an article I read. Google search agave syrup comparison for more information. I'm going to try Wholesome Sweeteners - dark, which according to the chart I looked at causes the lowest BS spike of the ones they compared. I am getting permission to post the article and I will let you know when that's on, in case you're interested.

Love and hugs…

I've used it for a couple of years and have had no problems. But it does seem i have to use alot more of it than sugar to get the same sweetness so I'm looking to cut back, just in case…

I feel most of the claims as to its ill effects are the result of individual reaction to it, and there are individuals who react illy to many common things. I got a couple of doozies myself, penicillin and some curries.

If it doesn't seem to bother you, it's probably a "good" sweetener. I'm sure it's not as dangerous as high BG.

Looking into stevia but haven't used enough to say.

I am trying Stevia right now and I also like Truvia

We've been using truvia also. Like it a lot. I wish I could get my old school inlaws to just try it. Thing is, she really likes to bake for the family, and I haven't yet tried truvia with baking. I wouldn't feel so bad telling the kids they can't have grandmas sweet so often. Have you cooked at all with truvia?

Howdy Patty
You might get better responses to your question if you started your own discussion page on this topic.

You may have a misconception about what "things that are good for me are suppose to be good for me ".

Blessings to you and yours

I really enjoy splenda however I don't use it too often. most of the time i use a little on my fruits just to take out the sometimes sour taste (as you can tell I'm not a big fruit eater).

jayabee52 2011-03-19 17:18:18 -0500 Report

as I said, it depends on how one's body handles it. Mine handles it . . . . not so well. You might be able to eat and drink it all day and still not be affected

jayabee52 2011-03-19 15:02:41 -0500 Report

It depends on one's reaction to Splenda. Many people like it, consume it, and have no problem. For me, I like it, consume it and then have to RUN not walk to the bathroom. It has a laxative effect on me.

I love splenda, especially now that they have splenda brown sugar ( for my oatmeal) and splenda for baking.. Just don't tell your non diabetic friends you are unsing fake sugar…There are those that are phobic about them. Most of them won't even know if you don't say anything…they just think they don't like it
