I went to the dentist today and had a bad outcom. I have an absesse on one of my tooth and i will have to have a root canal. Alot more of my teeth also need work. The doctor put me on penicelin to calm the infection down, but said since i am a diabetic i don't need to wait long to get this fixed because it can go septic. Has any of this ever happened to anyone. She also said that alot more of my teeth needed work and i said please just pull the ones in the back. I have had so much work done on my mouth in my life time. I am a little scared about this. I know diabetics have to take really good care of their mouths. Please talk to me abjout this.

Thank, bt it is hard to find a dentist who wants to pull your teeth, it seems like all they want to do is save them. I am talking my peniscellin now and hopefully next week i will get this root canal, but i am scared.+

Understanable! Who isnt scared of going to the dentist? Are you rinsing with Listerine or something at least a couple of times a day to help with the infection and keeping it clean?

no I have been brushing with sensodyne 2 times a day and flossing after each meal.

Hmm, flossing may iirritate the abcess, but only you would know because you know wheres its at and how it feels. I would definetly start using a mouth wash to keep your mouth as clean as possible. Hope your feeling better;)

Thanks, I will. Right now i might have about 20 to 25 thousand dollars worth of work done on my teeth over a life time. So you cab see why i am upset. I don't have dental insurance because now i am grown. i would rather get some pulled.

thanks

your dentist is right. An infection in the mouth can go spetic. I had to have a wisdom tooth pulled and the procedure alone threw my sugars high and landed me in the hospital (due to me not controlling my sugars before the procedure, or after it) It is very important for us diabetics to take care of teeth and ONE fo the reasons is that because we have the extra sugars in our blood, this affects our saliva which in turn affects our teeth. Causing more cavities and all around,..more problems. An infection in your mouth can severly affect your glucose. Hope this helped. Good luck with your antibiotics! :)

Your are right, bad teeth can effect your diabetes and it can also effect your heart. About 2 years ago I had the same problem, absesse tooth and more needed work. Every body is different, instead of going the root canal way I decided to have them all pulled and get a plate. The longer I would have waited the more it would effect my diabetes and heart, I also had a heart attack. It was a very hard to decide to have this done but for me in the long run it was the best thing to do. I'm like you I have had a lot of work done in the past and was just ready to put a stop to all the pain and work. Think about what you want to do and not about what the dentist want you to do. What ever decission you make it should be about you. We do need to take care of our mouths. But above all take care of yourself.
