My new diabetic term "Drive-By Spike". This is when you go someplace, specifically ask the person at the drive through window if a product is sugar free and they tell you yes but you find out otherwise later.Have you ever tried to order Un-sweetened Ice Tea at a drive through and the person only hears the sweet Tea portion?? This makes me so frustrated as a diabetic because i cannot have the sugar and do not have time to turn around and go back to fix this. This is known as a Drive-By sugar spike to me. Drinking it thinking you are ok and then checking your sugar level later only to find out that you've been hit by a drive-by!!!I once asked the manager of a place, "how do you want me to order this so it can be right each time?" He said, "just say Iced Tea because then you are sure to get non-sugar tea." Yeah well that doesn't work either. My advice is to speak slowly and clearly and say.. "I'll have Iced Tea With NO Sugar" I've had better luck with this and they seem to understand. Of course the people at my place know me now and know that i cannot have sugar so they double check to be sure. I love those ladies. Good luck!!~KG~…

Add your commentHappy day,
It's wonderful when you frequent the same place & you know your servers & they remember how you want things. Look how good God is He is in every situation we are in just watching our reaction to the siuation. Stay blessed & highly favored in the name of Jesus.

DRIVE BY SPIKES!!!! "IKE" LOL—- here a drive by is more than a spike. I don't think I'll use that term too much. However, my husband don't do drive thru either. He said that they always get his orders wrong. When I use them I take my time and check my orders, get a complaint, I tell the establishment it is their fault that someone is messing up the orders.
Ever watch Lethal Weapon where Joe Piscapo is saying they screw you through drive though all the time because they know you wont come back lol. Drive my wife nuts I never ever go through drive through, because it is true they mess up the order almost all the time. Especially now with my diabetes I have to see you make it or pour it, not taking that chance driving down the road have a sugar attack or something.
Great Feedback though
I like the term too. Oh yes, it aggravates me! while on vacation weeks ago, we were in this great little cafe and I LOVE chips and salsa. I know that if the salsa is low in sugar, I can have quite a bit. I can get away with it. But the chips are more carbs and I watch them. I break the large chips into several pieces, and put salsa on each piece. That way, I don't eat so many chips. Anyway, at our local El Chico, I can eat lots of salsa and doesn't cause my sugar to spike quickly nor do the numbers go up all that much. Well, at this place, I paid no attention when it said home made salsa. It was so good. I just started eating, about 3 tsp. I would estimate, and then all of a sudden, I got very light headed. Then it went away. I did not eat more, realizing what I had done, and I had two more light headed episodes. So I went to the restroom, checked my sugar, it wasn't too high, but it went up so fast! That first episode was so scary! I will be more careful in the future.
I like the term "Drive-By Spikes", I think I shall borrow it! Thanks! And yeah, I get awfully suspicious of being slipped a sugary drink at a drive-through when I know I've ordered something sugar-free. My BG levels have yet to substantiate this, but it is still a concern. I do try to mention the need for a diet-whatever drink at least a couple of times whilst ordering, but still, I guess mistakes can happen. Of course, that I haven't really gone to a restaurant where I didn't have at least some control over what I'm getting in about 6 months has probably helped!
I have had no problem getting unsweetend ice tea from any McDonalds drive thru. The only problem I have had is with Subway.
If you live anywhere in the south, it's pretty much impossible to get UN sweet tea. The story with the hot water and tea bag is hilarious!

I ALWAYS say listen to me carefully, that gets their attention, then I add ,I am diabetic. I would like a ice tea with no sugar. I always taste it before I pull off. There have been times when yep,you gussed it,sugar in the tea. At that point I ask for a manager. I get my tea free because of the mistake.
glad to know im not alone with this.. LOL thanks for the comments :)
I have never like sweet ice tea. It's always been hard to find any that isn't sweet.
If you ask for unsweetened Iced tea here, people look at you like an alien with three heads. I once had a waitress so confused with the concept of unsweetened ice tea she brought me a tea cup of hot water with a tea bag and a cup of ice.
I can sooo relate to this! : )
